the intent of the attack (not just "maybe i can get him/her"- rather "i'm going to get him or her with this...""), timing and the use of the whole body is evident in most of these. Great stuff

Superb find Moley, just spotted this thread.
For many, a really low stance just emphasises the 'viper-like' attacks.
Have noticed the bigger guys have and need really fast blocks.
Also the referees must have agreed to ditch the 'light contact' ruling to encourage such committed strikes and counters!!

In the last few sessions, you have asked the juniors to experience the difference between competition/tag and grading kumite.
That vid is a great reminder of how to blend the variation of techniques, sabaki and the good ole gyaku tsuki.

BTW, is MBs Godan video available as a link for viewing yet?

3 excellent clips.

The committment needed is shown, and displayed in droves, finish, finish.

Some the mawashi's and Ushiro's seem to me to be lighting fast.

I noticed the foot sweep (? Ashi Barai)  being used a few times as well.

Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all

...how often do you see Haito/Ridgehand-strike used to score ? (apart from it being illegal now of course...)

Ashi barai is great when used correctly. I noticed in Blackpool this year that many fighters where stopped and warned after attempting ashi barai - would any of the judges there (MB, Moley, Eryl) like to explain why? I have my own theory but I'd prefer the 'official' version!

Probably because the "Ashi Barrai" is used as a "STRIKE" and not as a sweep. Some "Ashi Barrai" are used as strikes to hurt/intimidate opponents and not as a put down..Therefore they are treated as attacks/kicks to the knee or shin and threfore not a legal technique in competition karate..

As a FIGHTING technique though.... very effective IMHO.

...I know that some styles - not sure about our rules - will even award a penalty if a Sweep or Takedown isn't immediately followed by a finishing technique and if the follow up technique isn't deemed to be immediately following on it isn't scored (you know that one wher you try a sweep and are amazed when it works for once and kind of stand there admiring the guy up in the air before relising you need to hit him again.....)  :D

...agree entirely about the damage potential Moley....
