Considering transferring from another club, and from Shukokai
« on: December 17, 2007, 09:27:25 PM »
Hi all,

I have been studying with a club for nearly two years now, and love my training.

However, I have increasingly become concerned with the commercial aspects of some clubs, and the devaluing effect this often has.

Gradings carried out two often, and failures rare, only 20-30 % of the time spent on Karate it questions the integrity of the training/club

So to the root of my question.

Has anyone with SRZ moved from such an organisation?

I currently study shukokai, although I know the two years have not been wasted, I would like to know that most of the skills are transferable, any thoughts.

I would really appreciate your feedback, as moving now seems like quite an upheaval, but I am seriously considering just that.

The rule is that anyone transferring from another "style" keeps their grade and wears their belt.
They study the next grading syllabus up and (WHEN THEY ARE REALLY PREPARED AND READY) they sit that next examination under sensei Kawasoe.

We arrange an external grading examiner like Sensei Kawasoe because this makes it fair..i.e. we don't grade our own students. (anyway even then it wouldn't matter as we are all voluntary, we do it cos we love training, we don't get paid and are not concerned with making money but only with keeping real karate standards)

As for someone who has done this..try Thomas Newman... came from shukukai..Graded 1st kyu by Kawasoe sensei and is currently "going through HELL" in preparation for his shodan grading.

Costs are £2 per evening ( you can do one/two or even all three of the training sessions it's up to you)...if you are ill/away on holiday and don't train then you don't pay. Governing body Licence costs £12
That's it ..end of story.

Hi, I think you need to decide what you want from your karate training.  If you are unhappy with what you are doing now, then change!  Try different clubs/styles whatever, because it is really important that you find what is right for you.  Try out Seki, if you decide it's not for you - that's OK, just move on.  You'll still be welcome back in the future  :D

Moley / Lloydie,

Many thanks for your responses both on and offline.

I have taken your sound advice, and now I have to make the right decision, as you say, for me.

I believe I know what I need/want to do, question is, how long will it take me to make the change, most of us know the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result, am I insane, we will see.

A few of my club members discussed this on Thursday night, and decided to give some feedback to the senior instructor, there is also a meeting of instructors planned where 1 or 2 with the same concern will raise it, so I have attempted to address my concerns ethically, so, perhaps whilst I visit 1 or 2 clubs, I will have time to see if there is any change.

I have my answer!

Thanks again and regards

Andrew

Just wanted to say that I have made the move, and after two weeks, I am glad that I did.

I can see that my techniques will improve with the new club.

I have stayed within Shukokai for now, but no more McD

I will keep in touch, if I may.

Thanks again Seki.

Heres to Karate, and not the quick buck.

Really nice Guy turned up Thursday night.. Marcus from Llanfairfechan... a Wado Ryu Karateka...Had the time of his life and really enjoyed himself. I enjoyed watching his rendition of our kata..beautiful...
Hope to see this Guy now on a regular basis..to make friends and exchange experiences.

No problemo - But bear in mind we are currently working on "the importance of the Jiku Ashi and it's role in smooth transference of power with speed."
Whilst doing this we are strengthening our Glutes and working on Zen no Zen.

No,don't listen to him, you'll be thinking so much about how great the training session was, you'll forget about the pain!

Well, sore glutes then, but after my first proper ride on my new bike, I already have a sore but! I'm sure Jim Carey said that in a film and people took it the wrong way, so if you missed the bit about the bike.......... new bike, not ridden for a while!
