Is Kihon Boring ?

The issue of etiquette is very simple.
1 Listen.
2 Do as instructed.
3 Wear a full gi at all times.
4 Wear your belt at all times.
5 In kihon, tell your opponent/partner what you are going to do and then do it and nothing else. :!:

I spent a short while training in another style of Karate before I saw the light again (I'm a born again Shotokanist  ) This other club did not enforce the rules of dojo etiquette, to wit some people turned up and trained in track suits, teeshrits, sweatshirts of various colours and even wore trainers :!:  These were not people new to karate and in the early phase to see if they like or enjoy it. They were green, brown, purple belts

It showed lack of respect for their instructors, lack of respect to the other students and lack if discipline and maybe a touch of arrogance - I cant be bothered to dress properly but Im better than the others anyway-

I think the vast majority of students at seki are in a different class from those in the other club and do show due respect to he instructors but there are some who sadly have an "I dont care" attitude

I was talking to my brother last monday.  He was saying about a club in Clwyd he takes his daughter to, that has, in his view, dipped alarmingly in disciplinary standards.  I can't name or hint at the club, but my sister-in-law LYNNE says that at one grading the "sensei" was on his mobile phone whilst students were going through the grading

Must try that one in Sensei Naito's class:
"Er.. sorry sensei, would you mind awfully repeating that combination again please - I had to take an important incoming call"

Wonder what my life expectancy would be?

On the etiquette thread I think..
Moley I cannot help but notice every now and then you translate the dojo oath to the class. One line and I think it is “Kekki no yu o imashhimuru koto” is translated as “donot show off!”. This blatantly contradicts the strongly voiced imperative to show off (especially during the precious moments we are on the grading platform). Would it be possible to use a different translation of the dojo kun? If I have got the line right it is written else where as “guard against impetuous courage”. Well I can see why you do not adopt that meaningless mouthful, but I am sure some another phrase, which better embodies the karate way, could be sought. Any comments or suggestions from club members?

I'm glad that last nights training has fuelled thought for this debate, however, I'm afraid that, unless you see the full picture, then method in madness is not that apparent...
Sorry for the riddle, but please, TRUST US, we actually DO know what we are doing.

LETS KEEP GOING AT THIS PACE,with the added punishments for breach of etiquette and insurbordination.
Students will SOON LEARN and will gain more from the experience not just physical exhaustion but the willingness of the mind/spirit to carry on.................some day your life may depend on this ..SPIRIT....

BElieve you me  I've been in some physical situations where I have been totally knackered but SOMETHING has carried me through..............

Lets keep going....NO PAIN NO GAIN

I THINK THE MESSAGE FROM MOLEY IS IN FACT NOT TO "SHOW OFF" but more "SHOW THEM WHAT YOU HAVE GOT" and from what I saw last SATURDAY was a lot of people finally showing "WHAT THEY HAVE GOT".............. I was well impressed and proud of ALL of the SEKI MEMBERS.........compared to others AS a club we are second to none................THIS IS DOWN TO THE  INSTRUCTORS....................who inturn deserve the respect by way of ettiquette FROM US ALL.

I rather like the poetry of the full translation of the dojo kun, for example found in Moving Zen.   "Guard against impetuous courage" can be interpreted in a number of ways and finding the significance on a personal level makes the chanting of the dojo kun much more meaningful I feel.

However, Moley's version is simple and straightforward, which is what the kids (at whom this version is aimed) need.  I read somewhere on the web a comment that adults should not need to be reminded of the principles of the dojo kun.  I disagree, I think it is necessary to hold with a clear and strong philosophy that tempers the physicality of what we do.  The full version should be meaningful to adults, the shorter version serves to remind kids that they are training in a serious martial art.

On the theme of etiquette, I agree with Dogberry.  The recent stronger emphasis on correct behaviour in the club is very welcome.

On the subject of the Dojo Kun, might I suggest perhaps in the Wedneday session either saying it in Japanese with the students replying in the english version, or just do it in English. Followed by a transition to Japanese only on the Monday and Thursday night sessions. This would then give an introduction newcomers and  teach the core values in the beginers session.

What do others think, or more importantly what do Gwyn and the other Dan grades think?

No harm in giving it a try.

On the don't show off theme though, I think Dogberry has hit it on the nose.
My interpretation being, if you are up there to show your teachers what you can do, then show it off as best you can. But if you are facing a dangerous opponent in Kumite.."Guard against impetuous courage".
