It's arrived
« on: March 13, 2008, 05:19:44 PM »
...and it's gone straight back

After waiting what felt like forever my Paul Chen Shinto Katana arrived with a badly damaged Scabbard! Mr Barrington was not very pleased as the replacement he is sending me is the only shinto he has left that he wanted to keep for himself!!

I assume it was damaged whilst in transit by the courier! Bunch of muppets!

Gwyn when are you having a cutting party!!!!!!!!!!!

When the weather is nice, and I have time to roll up and tie 100 straw mats.

Need 400 Rubber bands.

P.S. Please TAKE CARE now !
Remember how sharp that Shinto is ! also remember the 360 degree and 4 metres rule.
Read all the TAKE CARE STUFF on this forum AGAIN !
NOW !

Oh and also read about the Carbon Steel...don't touch the blade, if you cut with it DRY IT IMMIDIATELY.
Before re-Sheathing.
NEVER RE SHEATH AN USED BLADE WITHOUT THOROUGHLY DRYING IT FIRST.
Get yourself a whole roll of Kitchen roll from the kitchen.(or Tesco)
Once dry and re-sheathed..you can oil it later on at your leisure, but this MUST BE DONE SAME DAY.
NEVER LEAVE IT AND SAY "Oh I'll oil it tomorrow"
Strip it - uchiko it (GENTLY - Don't be rough or youll lose your Hamon) then oil it until it has a thin coating.
Did you get a cleaning kit with it ?
If not. I have some spare oil I made myself.. I will give you the recipie.
NEVER USE ANYTHING ELSE ! Never use WD40 It is NOT an oil !  Never Use heavy oil.

Cryfach oedd ei ebill ef a'i ddur,

...probably stating the obvious - but where safety is converned you can't be too careful - when drying or oiling wipe from the back of the blade (the blunt edge) towards the front

I envy you Liam, enjoy.

Not sure if it was Ray Mears, or Bear Grylls (or indeed another survivalist (nutter) that said;

"before you pick up a knife, pick up a first aid kit" especially important if you are not very close to home.

Bet you cant wait to try it out!

sword party? sounds like fun!
