Blisters
« on: April 12, 2008, 07:27:07 PM »
I have not had a blister quite as bad as last week since my forced marches and runs in solid boots.

Anyone have any tips for quick healing and prevention?

I will be in training, but may be at risk of falling on my a@+* as I will likely have a dressing on it!

quick healing = no such thing  :D

Stick a Compeed blister pad over it, and leave it until the damn thing falls off.  Do not be tempted to "drain" the blister, it is there for a purpose - to protect the layer of skin under.

Prevention = avoid friction events  8)

seriously, the rule is to keep the skin dry, use talc, change socks regularly (i.e. if they are wet with sweat they need changing)

make sure your boots are not tight or pinching in places, pad places that you feel are vulnerable.

did you obtain this delightful blister during training? I sometimes come home from a night training in the dojo with sore feet, I think this is a combination of things, mainly friction between your foot and the floor! Im still trying to master the technique of gliding along the floor!
When all else fails, refer to the manual

Hi Guys,

Yeah, in training, over two nights, didnt notice the problem though until the second night after the warm up, when the blister must have popped and lost the protection, then it did hurt, especially during Mawashigeri!

Dont usually have a problem hill walking as clean feet, socks, boots etc covered.

I think it will just take a few weeks to toughen up my feet to training on wood, rather than mats. :o

A few months more like - but yes they do stop for most people after a while. I walk around barefoot a lot in summer, that also helps toughen up the soles.

someone has mentioned salt, and if I remember right, for long distance walks, people used to apply white spirit or something, not sure about the health side of the latter.

Extract from the web: quality unknown

) For a while now I have been soaking my feet just once a day in cold yet very strong tea. I haven't wasted any teabags, I used the ones left over from the day. Already the skin on my feet has became slightly tougher. I wouldn't swear by this technique yet because I have only done it for a week or so.

2) Surgical Spirits. I haven't tried this one yet but apparently some hikers swear by this. CAUTION: : If you have sensitive feet, they may bleed.

3) Walking barefoot on steadily hardening/sharper ground can slowly help toughen your feet. This is generally like conditioning - it takes time. Take this technique easy and progress cautiosly. Don't go running through glass in your first week.

1 - effect is probably due to the tannin content of the tea solution - what may appear "tougher" (tannin has the effect of drying out the skin IIRC) may not be a good thing for preventing blisters

2 - myth - doesn't harden skin, and may be detrimental long term.

3 - the more you subject skin to abrasion the more it will respond by thickening to protect.  However, there is a down side to this as the thicker the skin gets the more inflexible it becomes and therefore is more likely to crack.  You need to keep it supple by applying something like Scholl's foot moisturising cream and rub down very thick areas a bit.

Well yes, but you can optimise you chances of not developing blisters by good foot care.  i.e. keep them dry when walking, keep the skin supple and flexible, and build up slowly.

its only the additional friction during training on a wood floor thats causing the issue at the moment, walking generally never been a problem.
