makiwara
« on: July 06, 2008, 02:37:27 PM »
Hi all,
I've put a new pad on my makiwara last night, used it this morning lovely feel to it.One problem though, I think i've over done it with the shutos. I can't seem to fully open my hand and keep my fingers together, they want to part. Any ideas? I'm proud of my makiwara, solid white oak planed, its 3 inch wide with a taper of 75mm to 9mm over a length of 1400mm, home made of course.

Mair bought cushions to go on outside chairs, bend one in half and use ties around it. I believe the tension/spring in the timber and the padding is just a bit harder than hitting a stomache full force (ideal).

the oak was bought from richards and sons timber merchant in Pentraeth, he specialises in exotic timber.

ah, nice timber, Arwel!   - my makiwari is made from Canadian redwood.  It is a lovely makiwara,  I started with a straw pad on it and then a foam one after I beat the straw one to death.  The foam pad is wearing thin now, but I think I will go back to the straw pad.

if you are thinking of entering the wild world of Makiwara training Emma, I would strongly advise against it at your age. If you want a striking target get a heavy bag and hang it up in the garage - it's good for kicks too  :D

I thought of using straw to toughen the skin but calculated that i'd be better off with something softer and so be able to use it often without feeling that its a chore. this way i am able to concentrate on the way I punch and hopefully learn quicker for example-after a dozen hard punching I found that if you hit with the face of the 4 knuckles of the fist the angle tends to make my fist bend up or down (ouch)but leading with 2 knuckles seems just right to having the fist in line with the arm.

oak is expensive but your talking about £30 to £50 ( mine was an offcut from a job, next offcut is going to captain Ritchie bones.

the toughening of the skin is a bit of a myth TBH - the makiwara teaches you good alignment and great feedback about power IMHO.

it can get a bit adictive I think, the feel of something when you hit is different to striking air, thats the reason for the bruised hand
