There is a fashion now of cutting large oversize targets and these boys are big. So the shinken used have been developed to be big / meaty and with a forward (Towards the tip) balance point. The extra weight towads the point once momentum has begun helps the weight of the sword cut through the target.
Myself.. I don't like these big meaty forward balance katana..
I like a light fast katana with the balance as near the tsuba as possible to enable controlled draw / cut / chiburi and noto.
After handling loads and loads of katana... The Hanwei Shinto (NOT THE SHINTO ELITE BTW) is still my favourite. Even faster than my Iaito for doing forms..(Even though one musn't doforms with a live blade)
