New legs please
« on: June 27, 2003, 02:11:13 PM »
Last night was a painful reminder of how bad my legs are. Can somebody suggest:

1 - Exercises to stretch hamstrings ?

2 - Exercises to strengthen the supporting leg ?

TIA

How about 5 Kicks Right leg (Only 5) then 5 with the left (only 5)

Repeat with Yoko Geri, Mawashi Geri and finish with Ushiro Geri.

I'll score you some Industial Strength on my next visit to Superdrug.

Not too sure about stretching hamstrings, I would have thought having a word with Gizmo would be a good idea before you try this.

I recall the problems Michael Owen had with his - and he has access to the best medical/physio stuff going.  As I recall he started doing big-time weight training on his legs, in the gym every day.

hope you are R.I.C.E.ing that knee for 48 hours as per medical advice?  Last you said to me on Thurs was "I'll put a cold can of lager on it then"

mobilise it gently after this is my advice.  Also in future get warmed up properly and get a good stretching regime going, practice it as much as you can, every day.

Bottom line is that you are getting older my man - welcome to my world - Muuhhahahahhahaa

Anyway my searches around the net uncovered some interesting stuff on stretching.

All this reading about injuries had bought out the hypercondriac in me - I reckon I have Piriformis

Hi Huw, have you had a look on www.stadion.com/column_stretch1.html
There is a series of these web pages taken from a book and magazine column written by Thomas Kurz, I found it quite enlightening and useful.

Can anyone recommend a decent physiotherapist ? I've visited Mrs Thomas in Pentir - and whilst I've no complaints I wouldn't mind a second opinion. Has anyone got any personnal recommendations?

TIA

Huw - You might speak to Eryl. He highly recommends a lady physio in Menai Bridge. She sorted him out and that's no mean feat :D

Huw,

I've also visited this lady in Menai Bridge, no fuss or frills.  Recomended.

However, what exactly do you need doing?

I'd also recomend the Chiro. in upper Bangor, again no fuss or frills, BUT big problem getting an appointment (Moley hasd the number).

My trouble is with my left leg (the OK one allegedly) - a combination of knee and/or hamstring pain depending in which way the knee is bent.

For example when I (try to) sit in Seiza I get a strong 'burning' pain behind my left knee. When I try to strech e.g. touch my toes, my hamstrings supply the pain. The Piriformis thing I mentioned earlier in the thread seems to be something to do with it. I've been doing the stretching exercises and that seems to have helped a bit.

The strange thing is that since starting training my 'bad' leg has been fine, and is now much stronger and more flexible than ever before. Jodan Maegeri ? No problem. The only way I can kick jodan with the left is either to ask my opponent to lie down or pick on someone very small indeed !!!

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a 'proper' ice pack - the type used by physios etc. I'm a bit fed up using frozen peas !!

TIA

I don't know about the real thing - you'd probably find plenty of on-line shops though.

We use those soft, gel ice packs that you get with cheap cold bags (you know, those bags you get in supermarkets for picnics or for taking your frozen food home).

They're cheap, stay cold for a long time and are flexible even when completely frozen.
