Methinks the Hobbit needs to understand the concept of "Polishing The Blade" - what one thinks one can "Do" - with experience and humility one learns that one can (and must) strive to "Do" better.....  :(

...and yes - great post Moley  :D

One always strives to do better, but accepts that one cannot do everything straight away, knowing one's ability and doubting one's ability are two seperate things!

Ah - I think I understand now Liam - you're talking about "performing" I think ?

So does this mean that if - for example - you've sparred recently with "person A" and "won" that you "know" that you can do so next time - since you will have no "doubt" about something that you have previously "done" ?

No because "Person A" will not act or perform the same everytime!

Im thinking more like when I do my Kihon Basics, I might do something and immediately after I'll tell myself "that was rubbish, you have done that better before, now do it better"

I not saying I dont ever have any doubts, im just saying I tend to ignore any doubts I have in karate and either tell myself I can do something, or that I cant do something yet!

However saying that I can do something doesnt mean I think im doing it correctly or perfectly

Nerves

I have stood in kamae frozen
I have stood in Kamae with my back leg wobbling like a jelly
I have spent all night before a comp on the toilet
I have felt physically sick after kumite
I have had to get up and fight without having eaten for 24 hours
I have had to get up and fight with a mouth full of sardine and onion sandwich
I have fought people I hated
I have fought people I like
I have hurt people I hate
I have hurt people I like
In the end
it's what we do
it's what we chose to do
like moths to a flame
We love it

What's to be nervous about? I imagine you would only feel nervous you if doubt yourself or your abilities! lol  :P

Liam, I will have to debate this with you, ok.

Being nervous, isn't necessarily about doubting your abilities, I know that I can perform Heian Nidan (ish) I did so today, nerves arise from the feeling that you want to perform everything the very best you can, for example, for the 32 seconds of kata for Heian Nidan, you want to give everything you have, and a bit more.

In my opinion, questioning your ability, is good, it pushes you to strive to do better. Ask yourself this, if you will.

Why continue to practice, say from one month ago, when we got up in front of the class to perform our katas? I think we all did them reasonably, so is it doubt about our ability that make us practice, or, it is the desire to do our best?  :D

I was impressed again today Jimmy, my second grading with SRZ, and the standards still impress.

I think I have said about my previous experiences of gradings, so I wont lower the tone here, the quality of the kata's kihon and kumite I saw was excellent.

I was relatively happy with my performance personally, I put as much effort and spirit into it as I could. But I have so much to learn, age ukes, are more like a roundhouse punch  my stance is to short, my shuto's are about ten seconds after I move

The kumite of those going for dan grades today was inspiring, especially Azzy. ( the kids did well also :))  I enjoy watching senior's grades, awesome. Really shows you what you are aiming for.
