I've heard that there are a few who have knee problems in the club, my basics were awful on Thursday but I couldn't bend my knees. After the grading and Monday training I couldn't go upstairs without going on all fours. Went to the docs yesterday and there's a lot of grating under the knee cap, I'm going to have xrays next week and i'm now on repeat prescription voltarol, but like Andyeilio said to me it only hides the symptoms and not sorting the problem, anybody else with this type of specific pain?

...well it wasn't the Battle of Wounded Knee  Twisted Evil

P.S. so rry to hear about the injury - sounds really painful - the knee problems you are refrring to with other Seki - are I suspect more due to longer term injuries possibly associated with older training drills....

This post is not directed at B&D - this is a general view of knee problems in karate, but I am really grateful that B&D brought the subject up as it is something i have been thinking about posting in the last few weeks.

I have knee problems, which are not a result of Karate BTW, but a problem where my right-sided lateral cartilage didn't develop correctly in childhood - apparently 3% of the population have this problem.  I have had surgery to correct it, but TBH it wasn't 100% effective and I still suffer.  Recently the other knee came out in sympathy - I look on it as a positive, as it takes my mind off the one I had the surgery on  Very Happy

It is absolutely essential that you try to move in correct alignment of your body, especially knees. You may have noticed that I spend a lot of time patrolling the kyu grade line trying to get people to: a) get their knees moving over their feet when they move forward, so that the stance transition is aligned; and b) to get the rear foot pointing forward as much as possible - even if this initially results in the heel being lifted.  It is far more important to get correct stance, then you can work on getting the heel down - which is also  important  Very Happy

If you have problems with your knees, then you really have to take care to ensure that you are NOT moving in such a way as to cause further damage.  Instructors can only do so much in telling you the correct way to move, you then have to take responsibility to move that way DESPITE what others might be doing.   I would far rather see someone moving correctly 3 times when others are doing 5, than see 5 incorrect moves.  This is not carte blanche to take it easy BTW  Twisted Evil  You also need to practice outside of the dojo, so that your body "knows" the correct way of moving.

hope this helps!

Lloydie

PS  Docs may tell you that Karate is really bad for the knees, however, I have found that karate  strengthens the muscles that stabilise my knee and so overall I find huge "knee benefit" from karate.

Thanks Lloydie, BTW my doctor did NOT think that karate was the cause of the problem and my monday, wednesday and thursday training was not overdoing it so good news there. I try not to take it easy in training and give it everything but Thursday I was really dreadful and knowing that mole bach was concentrating on hips and stances made me feel awful- don't think I wasn't trying I just couldn't. If you see me doing wrong don't hesitate to put me right.hopefully i'll be better on Monday i'm starting the 8 til 9 training every monday from now on Pray Very Happy/

As we dicussed B&D if you can take Voltarol slightly longer term, it should help a lot.

Glad to hear you got a quick apt and follow up.

P.S, I now plan normally to do two lessons on the Monday (if I can keep up). so I will get in myself somehow for the 7pm training, and if allright with you, get a lift back with you after the 8pm training has finished.

B&D, I had similar problems when I started karate. The advice I had was that the problem was largely down to lack of use in the past. I trained thrddough, with help from Mr Voltarol and Mr Brufen, and it worked out OK.

However please talk to someone who knows what's what - Bones for example - because everyone is different. I had serious knee problems for 12 years before even starting karate so I'm not a 'normal' case.
