Thursday night’s session concentrated on the hips, and the correct body position when blocking and punching.

This afternoon, I practiced trying to get my rear foot pointing forward, and my hips at the correct angle. Unfortunately, when I do twist my hips all the way back (in gedan barai), it pulls my rear foot outwards

The correct posistion feels alien, but after a couple of hours, it started to feel more natural, and the strain on the knee, is much less, as in Dave Lloyds comments on the B&D knee thread.

I also can feel the benefit in speed and power when using the hips.

The dan and senior kyu grades have all said to me at some point that I am using too much shoulder, and I think I now understand a little better why, and how to correct it.

I felt it was easier to get right in Gyaku zuki, (static) but when moving forward in Oi zuki or gyaku zuki, it seems much harder, is this normal?

Also looked at Sensie’s dvd for the correct timing of using the hip when moving forward, and it seems to be as the foot lands but before it rests in final position.

Any comments would be appreciated, thanks.

Regrading the "foot moving outwards" - make sure your stance width is correct - try subtle adjustments - wider/narrower - I suspect you may be a little too narrow.

Other possibiltie are trying to keep the back leg "too straight" when in Hanmi position - let it flex a little and think about the feeling of pressing the outside edge of the foot down and not just the heel.

Thanks Jimmy, MB corrected my position in exactly this way on the night, I know this is going to take some time to get right.
