Alex , it seems to me that your main dilemma is between empi and jitte.Personally I did jitte in my nidan grading but you should be able to do empi at least good enough to see you through the grading also.
My advice is to work on both for a few weeks and then decide which you think is best. The emphasis on your training should be on your kihon ( We know you da man at kumite! ) as this is where the hard work should be done...simply put , if your basics are strong the rest will fall into place.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that making a fancy show of the kata and kumite will see you through, strong spirit & good kihon are much more important...get this right and the grading is a formality.
Hangetsu is the kata which is most difficult of the 3 interms of being able to demonstrate that you actually know what it is about. Hangetsu has been put into the wrong stage of the syllabus at nidan IMHO.( Should be higher )
'Nuff advice - just train like crazy !

He's on about the car...he's always on about the car........ hey Alex, if you spent 10% of your "car" time on your bike instead, imagine how pimped that would be........Im thinking lawn mower engine......sunroof....... then you'd be able to keep up
