Now that everybody is realising that free/open source software is often as good if not better than the 'paid-for' alternatives it might be an idea to start a list of some of the best!

Web Browser
Firefox
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Google Chrome
http://www.google.com/chrome

E-mail Client
Thunderbird
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

Office (word processors/spreadsheets etc.)
OpenOffice
http://www.openoffice.org/

Photo Editing
The Gimp
http://www.gimp.org/

Illustration / Drawing
Inkscape
http://www.inkscape.org/

Photo/Image Management
Google Picasa
http://picasa.google.com/

These are all free to download and use. Any more recommendations?

Edited to include Picasa

Now that people are using firefox, why not download vids from youtube, but you'll need to be able to convert them once on your hard drive...

And why not speed up that download with this..

And if you don't want to convert them just use this free media player - VLC - which plays nearly everything - great slow/fas control as well

I'm a fairly recent convert Huw - I'm sure I'd appreciate it even more if I was clever enough to understand half the advanced and streaming features  Sad

Seki is my Homepage, so I usually access Forums via homepage.
With IE if I access forums, I'm already logged on. But with Firefox, I'm not.
I have to either sign in again or access via bookmarks which keeps me signed in

I use firefox as well moley and all I needed to do was re-login to the affected forums and check the option to stay logged in..... you can also have firefox manage your login ids and passwords if you wish - I don't....

Help. Confused
I'm trying to download a video from you tube,I use a website called media converter,it asks what type of video file I want to convert it into, the choices are:3g2,3gp,avi,flv,m4v,mkv,mov,mp4,mpg or wmv.Does any one know which one I need to choose,I've tried mp4,it won't open.I'd like to open it with windows media player.

WMV is the most "native" to windows and will play without any problems Emma.

IMO it's much better/easier to use a Firefox plugin called "DownloadHelper" which lets you download any movies from a webpage directly to your PC - you can the use the free program "Super" to convert to any format you want..... although I usually just keep them as .flv and play them using VLC mentioned above which is a much better media player anyway  Smile
