moving
« on: January 30, 2009, 08:38:39 AM »
I haven't seen many asking for advice lately so here goes again.
During kumite partnering up with Dave Jackson( see the use of partner and not "going against") we did Moley's madness, my issue is I was ok during 1 or 2 moves but when getting tired I lost focus, kime, doing weak moves. I know i get out of breath quickly and struggle to get a proper lungful and feel as if i'm going to pass out but it passes, but leaves me lethargic if thats the word. my problem this time is this.  issue of being strong, brave and holding my ground and not moving before/when a move comes in, or looking weak and moving too soon and looking afraid. last night Dave came in with a good maegeri and all I did was wait and blocked, smashed my arm on his leg swore like a mad man, used a nasty word because of my pathetic move and came from there feeling worst than when I was  a 10th qyu. When will I learn?

Chill out Arwell - You obviously are already - by questioning what you're doing and recognising when it doesn't work for you you can adopt a slightly different approach next time, and if you don't think that you are doing something wrong or couldn't do it better then you probably are and definitely have stopped learning.

The key advantage that you have is that you have committed training partners who won't let you away with mediocre attempts and will "punish" you accordingly.

A major problem in some clubs is - and even with some students in "good" clubs - is if the don't commit to their attacks or target areas and their partners get a false sense of security because they nevr really need to make their techniques work.

I don't know the details of "Moley Madness" (apart from his general demenour of course....) so some details if the trainin drill might be of benefit to us "distance learners".

its crossed my mind to tie up my arms and just focus on moving away in partner work so that i'm forced to move instead of relying on arms.

Moving first and getting the distance right is a very good idea before concentrating too much on the arm movements or blocking - but "take the arms with you".

I keep telling myself that as well - recovering from a hand/elbow/shoulder injury from before Christmas because I moved off at an angle to block/avoid a heavy kick but left one arm behind......

Nope - but doesn't matter - the principle is sound  :P

...you should (IMO) be training to position yourself firstly - in order to be able to "use" the arms as you choose in response to the attacking technique.... we're often told to think of the "block" as being there to "cover you" in case you either get it slightly wrong or the attacker doesn't actually attack to target (or of course you simply wish to damage the attacker).

If you think to much about the blocking itself you tend to introduce all sorts of bad habits IMO.

Arwel , the fact that you get frustrated is good as this indicates that you are thinking about your karate. Try and turn your frustration into positive thoughts about what you need to work on. There are many aspects of what each karateka does which they are frustrated with because they don't seem to work , myself included. The key is to understand what you need to do to improve your techniques and work on this in every training session.

Always try hard and it will click one day, then you can move onto the next thing which frustrates you and so on.
I enjoyed training with you last night BTW !
Cheers ...

Oss Dave

partnered up with Dave again last night. I have a theory that might explain my mistakes with Kumite, here goes:
Because Dave is so advanced in comparisson he naturally pushes me above my normal level to a degree that I will attempt anything in order to keep up, hence the lack of control(but accurate)uraken that I delivered as a counter last night right beneath his temple( can you advise me if its worth buying a 1 way ticket to the outer Hebreddies before the next session with him  [-o<)apparently he's going on holiday and was not looking forward to going nursing a black eye.

Arwel - here's a little tip - your strategy only works if you don't tell anyone where you're going - let alone post it on a public forum - or if you do post it then make sure to emmigrate to somewhere else
