My Dad (Pete Hughes) used to do a kata anywhere with a flat floor and enough room to swing a cat I remember we went to some ruins in Greece when I was 8 years old and he found a solitary spot and did Bassai-Dai This is just one example out of numberous times he did this! I can't see an open area with a flat floor without thinking "that'd be good for kata!"
I did Bassai Dai at dawn on top of a cliff overlooking a small French town in Normandy. It was almost poetic!
Oh and BTW a little tip Dad taught me when I started karate - if you're having trouble sleeping, visulise yourself doing a kata. You'll never reach the end, you'll fall asleep in a jiffy. I think it's a good idea to do this anyway though (visulising yourself doing a kate). It's difficult at first, your mind wanders etc, but doing it often will gradually get your brain to stop thinking about other things and will focus you on the kata.
Manon.

Hi Manon, thanks for sharing this. I think you are understating (probabally intentionally) just how powerfull doing the kata would have been, it does sound like a very beautifull moment Arwel told me about running through the kata mentally, and i now also do that. It does work. and quicker than visualising fish fingers i can tell you. although that does work also at times.
