boxing related stuff
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:54:34 PM »
thought I'd start a new thread, and who better to start a boxing thread but:

Foreman talks about Ali

I don't think we'll ever see the likes of Ali again
The banker man grows fat
Working man grows thin
It's all happened before
And it'll all happen again

I saw this when I was 12 years old - I don't think I have ever seen a fight like it:
Ali vs Cleveland Williams
The banker man grows fat
Working man grows thin
It's all happened before
And it'll all happen again

Happy (slightly belated) Birthday to Ali on his 70th.  One of the bravest boxers and all round great ring artists I have ever seen.

Nice post Dave - That Ali v Williams fight would never have gone into the third round these days - those boys were tough ....
I wonder who would have won between Tyson and Ali both in their prime - Unfortunately my money would be on Mike.

Look at this ...I remember this fight - before it happened people thought that Spinks had a good chance against Tyson, he was undefeated World Champion. One of Spink's corner men went into Tyson's changing room - Tyson was punching holes in the wall before getting in the ring !

For me, Ali was not only one of the greatest boxers of all time, he was one of the greatest athletes of all time. I would have put my money on Ali winning in later rounds. His speed, mobility and accuracy would have worn down and more importantly it would have frustrated Tyson. All conjecture but interesting to compare nonetheless.

I was going to say that Ali in his prime would have beaten Tyson but the truly sad thing is that we never got to see him in his prime. His best years were taken away from him in boxing terms for his refusal to fight in Vietnam.

Tyson had fantastic in-fighting speed and aggression.  His in-your-face style absolutely blew the opposition away, very much in the Frazier style of low body movement and explosive hands, until people twigged a way to frustrate him and stand off him.  Would Ali have beaten him? - who knows, but it would have been one hell of a good fight!!  Personally, I think Ali would have had Tyson, on the basis that he fought and eventually defeated similar fighters, e.g. Frazier & Norton.  But they gave him big problems at their best.

As Gizmo says, we never really saw the best years of Ali.  Angelo Dundee  says that the Cleveland Williams fight was the best he ever saw Ali as a technician. He was improving on what was already a prodigious talent, but importantly, there were still some great boxers out there to hone his skills on.  What fights they would have been!

A great athlete, boxer and a grand ambassador for sport.

This bout was totally devoid of boxing skill - but an incredible fight as the same.  And a belated tribute to Ron Lyle who died last November:

Lyle vs Foreman 1976
The banker man grows fat
Working man grows thin
It's all happened before
And it'll all happen again

and after all the talk about 'the greats' we're still left with David Haye and Dereck Chisora :(

Will be very interesting to see what happens in the aftermath of this incident.

these guys are a disgrace to British boxing.  Decent boxers do their fighting in the ring where it belongs.
