My dear friends and fellow karateka, it is with a very sad heart that I have to inform you all that Sensei Peter Hughes died today Monday May 18th at 4:30pm.
Pete was a dear friend, colleague and all round good guy. I first got to know him when he joined the Gwynedd Shotokan Karate club many years ago. Later, when the Leisure centre was built in Caernarfon, Pete was made Chief instructor of the new Karate club that was started there. Pete named his club "Sakura" which is Japanese for cherry blossom in honour of the beautiful cherry trees that line the road leading up to the Leisure Centre. Pete worked hard for years, not only as Chief instructor of Sakura, but also as Chairman of the WTKF. Many a time, Pete had the vision, the vitality, the drive and the confidence to start new exiting projects and see them through. We as karateka all owe Pete for making our association the successful well run organisation it is today.
"Oss Sensei Pete, my good friend, I will miss you, But when I close my eyes and remember you, I can always hear your laughter, your kind words and good advice"

Gwyn

What sad news.  He was a real inspiration, both in karate and in the stoic way he bore this awful illness.

My thoughts are with Rhian, Manon and Rhiannon and everyone who knew and loved him.

Sad news.

Pete was a true example of a martial artist who had honor in the spirit of Budo.  A calming influence in hot debate, and an immovable spirit in Kumite.

I have known Pete for many years, nearly 30 in fact, since he walked into the Dojo for the first time with Eryl, both fresh faced with no idea what they were letting themselves into.  He will be greatly missed by all UKTKF seniors, students and club instructors, Kawasoe Sensei included.  It has been an honour to have known and to have trained with such a very special person.

Our deepest sympathy goes to his loved ones.

Oss.

This is very sad news for all of us who knew Pete. He was always such a solid presence both as a karateka and as a man. He was the first to admit that he wasnt a natural athlete but was blessed with a fierce determination and rarely took a backward step. Despite this inner toughness he was also a truly gentle and generous man. He will be missed.

E-mail from Min:

Really Really Really Sad.  You have described him perfectly  he will be missed so much.  But his memory will live for ever he has left a big legacy to carry on.  I have always carried around with me the words of advice and wisdom that he gave me and they will always be there.  Please keep me posted for the funeral.  My love and sympathy to his poor family.

All my Love

Ming Yuk

My deepest sympathies to Pete's friends and family.

Although I have known Pete for a short time, he always made me feel welcome.

I attended a WTKF committee meeting, and he was kind and open enough to listen to the ideas of someone inexperienced and new to the club.

The philosophy of "colour of belt doesn't matter" came across strongly, something I hadn't seen before joining the Seki/WTKF.

I am personally grateful for everything that Pete worked for.

My deepest sympathies to all the family, it is very sad news indeed

I only knew Pete for a short time but I learnt a great deal from him during the time I trained at Sakura.

I can honestly say that during the time I have been training with Sakura and Seki I have only heard good things said about Pete, and what better way to be remembered that through the kind words of others.

I opened my e-mails this morning only to find the sad news from Gwyn that Peter had passed away. It's only a few weeks ago that I met up with Dave Lloyd and went to see Peter and his family. I was lost for words, I must admit, I am not very good in these situations but when I was leaving, Peter said to me, don't worry, I understand, its OK, you look after yourself and enjoy your early retirement, I felt the warmth of a very special person who was ready to accept his fate and to meet his maker. I will remember Peter Hughes as long as I live as a very special person, a true karateka and an ambassador to the Art.

My deepest sympathies to his Family at this sad time.

Mike Burton.
