My favourite kick has to be, without a doubt, mawashigeri. However, in actual combat, when this kick or any kick is executed to the jodan area it leaves the attacker suceptible to counter attack unless he is quick and precise enough to hit the target and return to a ready position in time for the counter. :!:

 I belive the most effective kicks in combat are those below the belt, in particular to the instep, the kneecap, the shin and, to a certain extent, the groin area   . Firstly, they act below eye level of the assailant, so they are difficult to see. Secondly, they can cause maximal damage when executed to these areas and the reach of the leg allows you to attack when you are a considerable distance from the opponent.

My favourite hand technique is haito (ridge hand). It is unconventional and sneaky and can cause a lot of damage when executed properly. It's downside is that it can be easily blocked if you are not fighting in close quarters with the opponent

:P What are your favourite techniques and why?

When does Kawasoe teach next?

Hi Rogers.

Welcome to Seki.
I dont know many students who spend their Saturday nights on forum   anyway.

You may remember me. I have suddenly grown a dislike of mawashigeri. I was the one who Huw kicked Wednesday. And it still hurts especially if I laugh. Ive got imprints of Huws toes on my ribs.  ](*,)

Anyway nice to meet other Karateka.

At the moment... it has to be shuto uki. I figure it could be particularly nasty when using the 'kime' hand to pull the opponent off balance and expose the throaght area for the strike. I've been wanting to try it out during one of Moleys 'sabaki drills' (with a lot of control I hasten to add), but I've not had the confidence/coordination under pressure to give it a go as yet.

Hehehe. The two most obvious give-aways are the action of Gedan Barai - like cocking a gun - and the feet when moving forward in front stance (the feet come together mid-stride). I don't know if Moley noticed different things tho'.

Most KUGB guy's are "noisy" not just during the Ki-ai but in all moves.
Their Kata are like an orchestra tuning up.
Very similar to a Karateka we have who used to train in Syria.

Also the locked back leg is  giveaway.

Moley,

I gues you mean "Jimmy The Hoover"  :?:  if so its "Self-Assigned" because after a couple times performing any Kihon drills up and down the Dojo I tend to sound like an old vacuum cleaner as I desperately try to suck air into my fading old lungs

Cheers,

JTH

P.S. Don't know what you and Huw are on about regarding KUGB "habits" - they most certainly do not refer to me in ANY   way WHATSOEVER [-( [-( [-(

(Eryl speak)
"ahh, this wan, hmm, maybeee this better ahh, Hiki-Te, ehhh"

Guy,

In other words, the "retracting/reaction" hand is refered as to 'hiki-te'.

It has 'many' uses, one of which you have allready discovered, keep thinking about it;
