Books
« on: June 25, 2009, 12:10:53 PM »
I love books, love reading.

I went to see Mike Burton yesterday, wanted a particular book, and was shown his "stock" couldn't believe it, thousands of books in that warren.

I wanted to increase my flexibility, which is coming on, but slowly, so got a book on this, (sorry Gwyn, not a historical text) also spotted a couple of Clive Layton books, which I might consider in a month or two, as having read his book on Sensei, I would like to read more. So many of the books he has are not listed for sale elsewhere.........oh, if only I had a spare £100 or so....... some quite old books, bound, boxed, gold leaf........b/day present?

I would recommend anyone who hasn't been to see Mikes collection yet to go and have a look.
Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all

I wanted to increase my flexibility, which is coming on, but slowly,

Top tip :D:Do dynamic stretching(i.e leg swings, forward, side, back)every morning straight after you get up,(it's a good way of waking you up too!)do static stretching(like we do in training, hold each stretch for 30 seconds)every night before going to bed.
The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in battle,a fool says I can't, a wise man says I'll try.

...but MAKE SURE that you know the difference between DYNAMIC and BALISTIC - OR ELSE....

OMG,Andy make sure you know the difference because with ballistic stretching you can easily overstretch and injure yourself.

Ha ha!
If you do the dynamic stretching in the morning you don't need to do a jog first.(which is handy)This is because of the type of stretch it is you're moving as you do it.BUT i.e with the leg swings start low first and then gradually raise your leg higher, don't raise your leg as high as you can on the first rep.
IMPORTANT=DYNAMIC IN THE MORNING NOT STATIC.

No need to go into detail - quite simply it's when some twat takes the warmup and gives you a "swinging" stretch instead of a "lifting" stretch and the resulting pain makes you go "balistic"......

...alternatively

“Dynamic stretching, according to Kurz, "involves moving parts of your body and gradually increasing reach, speed of movement, or both." Do not confuse dynamic stretching with ballistic stretching! Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and arm swings that take you (gently!) to the limits of your range of motion. Ballistic stretches involve trying to force a part of the body beyond its range of motion. In dynamic stretches, there are no bounces or "jerky" movements.

Yep - the Kurtz stuff (briefly) involves a quick cardio warmup followed by static stretches which you hold and then whilst at maximum range of movemnet you perform an Isometric muscle contraction and hold and release - repeat a few times and then relax into the static strech again with slightly increased maximum natural miovement in the stretch.

He also stresses very heavily the importance of having suffucient muscular strengh first to enable the stretches to be hel properly and the overall importance of good core body strength.
