do we pass the 24 fighting chickens test?
« on: October 13, 2003, 08:21:22 PM »
24 fighting chickens has just launched a "best practice" find-a-karate-club.  This involves a pop quiz that tests clubs on quality issues.
http://www.24fightingchickens.com/mu/findaclub/index.html

how do you think we stand up to the "pepsi test"?  Are there things we should improve? Do any of these test criteria remind you of "other" clubs (whose students now appear to prefer "Seki pepsi"   )

You could do a great black and white gi with a mean-looking magpie on the back - that would be wicked!

Hmmm....all well and good, but are you absolutly sure you're sensei is up to scratch? I really don't want to cause trouble or make things any more difficult for you guys than they already are, but..well...just have a quick read of this (it's an extract from Plee's "Beginner to Black Belt", so it must be true)

"The way (Do) will be hard, full of aches, pains, and sometimes, tears, yet with far fewer blows and injuries than you might suppose. You must clench you teeth and hold on, this will be a test and a much greater one than ever imagined. At any rate, it will be IF YOUR SENSEI IS UP TO HIS JOB. For the spirit cannot  be mastered without severe tests, like ELECTRIC SHOCKS  ...."

I do hope you're not neglecting your duty to your students Gwyn.

Susan, I can assure you that Seki members are regularly taken to "a local unit" where Mole Bach and Wes ensure that they receive sufficient electrical shocks to their brains, so that they can resume training in a happy and relaxed manner.

Not only that, but the Seki Welfare Society kindly donate slippers, embossed with the Seki logo so that :
a)  Seki members know who they are, and
b)  Members of "the unit" know who they are too

Mr Myiagi was wrong

I think this thread is ideal for this posting. Considering Redmond's philosophy on karate whereby you are banned from his forum if you mention the "Z" word (Zen) and Susan's recent contribution.

When the film "The Karate Kid" first came out, I was quite pleased, at last a film that caters for us karateka (I foolishly thought). Alas over the years and two sequels later we see that the image of the karateka has changed.
The public's attitude to us has changed and everyone's an expert. (Or so they think ! )
I now keep finding myself thinking that "The Cobra Kai" clubs in the film had the right idea and that Daniel San was a bit of a whimp. I no longer chant the Dojo kun (Sorry) because (well we won't go into that just yet) and there are "other" things that I don't do any more.
Am I right or should I visit the "special unit" Lloydie talks about ?

I'm not sure what you're asking - or perhaps I should say i'm not sure what you think is good/bad, right/wrong. I do think that everyone should be true to themselves though - if it matters what others think try and convince them. If not...well as the saying goes "the dog barks and the caravan moves on".

I think Rob Redomond's site is valuable whether or not you agree with him because it encourages you to re-think things...challenge your assumptions. Perhaps everyone's becoming too cynical - then again, people tend not to talk about what they really think. Some stuff just doesn't bear scrutiny (and open discussion)...it doesn't mean it's wrong.

Some stuff you said early on in the tkgreenock forums I disagreed with at the time. Now I think perhaps you're right. But more recently you've said that you've changed your mind, so....

Although I agree - methinks Mole bach is going a bit too far on this subject.

for example: Training on Monday:

Mole bach - "Azzy, take the leg"
Azzy - "But his knee !"
Mole bach - "You have a problem with that Mr Thomas ?"
Azzy - "Sir - NO - Sir"
Mole bach - "Fear does not exist in this Dojo  ...Pain etc etc................

What's wrong with:
