At the moment I'm using McAfee Internet Security 2008 and Avast Pro
The years subscription on both is comming to an end and I wanted the same coverage or better with less system drain

Something like that thats complete. I run other programs on the computers periodically anyway just incase but nothig gets through.

"Integrated Suites" tend to cost money Azzy free stuff is usually seperate modeules and I tend to just go with various "bits" from differnet free sources but see these links for commercial suite reviews :-

Keep Windows patches up-to-date.
Use Firefox.
Don't visit dodgy websites.

I used this policy when I ran Windows on my laptop and had no problems at all for over a year. No costs, no resource hogging, no hassle.

A good firewall on the PC is an absolute must - despite most routers having a firewall as well they only protect against some "incoming" threats.

AVG and Comodo Firewall.

Comodo is the one of the best firewalls around in my opinion.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/

(Comodo is a bit larger than you might expect because the download includes both a Firewall an Antivirus, however you can choose to install just the firewall)

A good firewall on the PC is an absolute must - despite most routers having a firewall as well they only protect against some "incoming" threats.

Jim

Completely agree Jimmy, a good firewall installed on a pc is a must. The built-in Windows Firewall is far better than nothing, however this only does half the job as well ('incoming' only).

Signatures under a post draw attention away from the content. This is why i don't have one.

The current AVG Free can be very resource hungry - especially if you allow it to enablke all the web fuiltering and once it's "on" it's very very difficult to turn off.

I much prefer the AVAST! AV and associated scanners now.

Agree with you here Jim, when my AVG schedulled scan kicks in, everything else slows down to a snail's pace !
Where do we get these other ones Jim ?  Are they easy to install ?   How hard is it to Uninstall AVG free ?

Moley - uninstalling AVG Free completely should just a matter of using the standard windows unistal software from the control panel optionns or alternatively the startmenu folder for AVG FRee should have an unistall option in it.

Avast! AV etc. is available from here :-

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

When you instalkk it you will be asked to register it to be sent the permanent key by email and it will run without the key for at least a month and the key will be emailed out within a day or so at most.

When I uninstall AVG Free..what happens to all the viruses stored in the AVG vault ?
Will they be released back into the system ?

No chance - the vault file will either simply be deleted - this removing the virus copies forever - or it may ask you if you wish to delete the vault - in either case the virus copies are no longer harmful in that form.
