O.K. Jim all done... AVG gone - system is MUCH faster !
I've registered and installed Avast.
So how does this Avast work then ?
1. Does it check for upgrades automatically ?
2. Do I have to make it link up and check for upgrades ?
3.  Does it have a schedulelled scan built in or do I have to programme it to do so?
4.  is it on all the time i.e. real time protection ?

1 - I'm pretty certain that's the default behaviour Moley

2 - Don't think so but may need to allow the update check through you're firewall on the Pc the first time so force a manual update and see if it works and if it does your firewall is O.K.

3 - Nope - no scheduled scanning unless you buy the "Pro" version but I don't use scheduled anymore anyway as the on-access/realtime scanning protects all new files etc. so I did a full scan after installing and every couple of weeks I do a manual scan if I've been downloading a lot of stuff although it shouldn't really be necessary. It's pretty easy to knock up a scheduled scan if you really think you need it though so let me know and I'll post the info.

4 - Yes by default all the real-time scanning/protection services should be enabled

I like this one Jim.
It's simple effective and better still does not slow everything down like the AVG did.

I've been running Sophos - which is the Uni preferred virus checker, must say I think it is total cr@p.  Think I'll convert to Avast

well as im a paranoid person i tend to worry more about my security rather than preformance, so run

avg free (though resource intensive it is a lot more efficient than both norton and mcaffe)
comodo firewall
Comodo boclean (active malware scanner)
and adaware passive scans

slows me down a tad - specialy due to boclean but the system is rock solid against everything but a loic attack :P
