Unless you play PC games or have some piece of software you desperately need I'd suggest you try changing your operating system. (At his request) I just converted Glynllifon's caretakers laptop from the hated Vista to Ubuntu 9.10. He reckons it's ace. All the crap about Anti-Virus and trojans etc. has now disappeared - he can just get on with using his laptop without any hassle. If all you need is T'Internet, Skype, Instant Messenger, MS compatible Office etc. then Ubuntu will do it just fine.
BTW if you really want to stay with Microsoft Jonsey is right. McAffee is pants! AVG is good but eats your memory like there's no tomorrow. Avast (also free) seems to be OK - detects most of everything, doesn't take over your PC and is cheap or free.
Out of interest Manon do you use MSN? I've fixed dozens of PC's for people over the years and pretty much everybody who uses the MSN Messenger software has been infected with viruses. Trillian or some other such messenger software could well help stop you becoming infected again.
BTW, I know I'm not the only one here which fixes other peoples PC's etc. Anyone noticed that Vista seems to trash it's hard disk? I've had three Vista laptops in recently and ALL of them have had serious hard disk issues - i.e. thousands of bad sectors etc. In years of fixing XP stuff I never saw anything like this!
