Dear Huw, Years ago you bought a piece of wood with the intention of carving out a new tsuka for a katana. I know you no longer have the said katana, but do you by any chance still have the piece of wood? if so how much do you want for it?

If I can find it you can have it. IIRC it was a pick-axe handle.

No Huw, I have an absolutely gorgeous folded, finger polished blade, but the koshirae and same are crap. I'm going to replace the Tsuka and use "Uma" themed koshirae. Will post photo's later.

Just bought this off e-bay:
A piece of Exotic Stingray Hide which is also known as Shagreen . The hide has only been cleaned, bleached and dried and had not been tanned. It is exactly as was used on good quality swords, samurai and daggers and is the ideal material for restoring or reproducing implements of this period. Each piece measures a minimum of 6 inches wide and vary between 12-14 inches long, the dimensions being taken through the centre of the hide. These hides are what is know as long hides.
Stingray Hide or Shagreen has been used for many purposes over the centuries including the decoration of boxes, scientific instruments and also Furniture. Nowadays it is also being used for making trendy jewellery and accesories. As mentioned this hide has not been tanned and when you receive it, it will be quite stiff and curved, it can be flattened and worked easily when it is dampened.

I'd suggest a chat with Big John. The blade and fittings look great, seems like a shame to spoil them by using a pick-axe handle! Anyway, I can't find the remains of the thing I was building. The only close match in my house is Odi's broomstick - but I don't think she'll let you use that
