Sh!T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
O.K. then
Anyone know how I can safely "Blue" (artificially age) a Tsuba ?
I had a Tsuba which was stupidly Crap on the Ura side whilst being Brill on the front.
I "Modified" it with a dremell and it looks great apart from being very shiny now.
I want to age it same as rest of Tsuba.

not sure, but I heard white vinegar ages metal - never tried it though, and not sure how effective it is.

Moley - have you any gunsmiths local to you ? - they usually sell bluing treatments or may be able to blue the tsuba for you at a reasonable cost.

Hi Jimmy, the last gunsmiths in our area closed down after the firearms ban and we don't have any here any more.

BTW Moley - what metal is the Tsuba made of ? - this might affect how easily you can age it

Jim

Not as easy as I thought Jim. It's a Paul Chen Horse Tsuba. Very nice (Apart from the "Ura" side which I modified with a Dremell) Trouble is it's "Non magnetic) meaning that it's some kind of alloy and not steel. Hence my usual ageing method following a couple of drinks, Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed :oops:doesn't work.
This is not the nice Tsuba I'm using for the Uma sword BTW. This is much cheaper, but nice nonetheless.
For some reason this is a photo of the "Ura" side and you can see the ugly lump on the uppermost pony's rump which I suppose is to represent a back leg? This is what I removed with a dremell and made it smooth to represent a muscle on the hindleg instead.

This is the "Other side" the nice one.

This is the viewing side
How to tell ?
Well
1. The katana is worn blade uppermost on the left hip
2. If a katana has a Kozuka (Little decorated knife) & sometimes even a Kogai (Spike like thing) then the ornate handle of the Kozuka must be hidden away from the observer when wearing the katana. The Kozuka handle fits through the semi circular hole in the Tsuba, whilst the Kogai handle tip fits through the funny shaped hole.
So if you study this photo you will see that if we place tsuba on Katana with semi circular hole nearer body/hip, then it is this side which faces handle - viewing side.

No so cheap Moley - saw that Tsuba offered for about $40 on a website recently...

Worth trying Dave's Vinegar soak solution and if that doesn't work you could try an ammonia dip - check your household bleaches/cleaning products - or your Hairdye  Twisted Evil <Kidding> .

Bleaching/corroding doesn't seem to be working. I'm sure the original finish is some sort of paint sprayed on.
Might have to rethink and use car spray or something?
Anyway - here's the actual Tsuba with the lump removed.
