Older you get the better taste you have ? :S
« on: March 03, 2010, 12:42:51 AM »
When i was in my early teens but a few years ago i found the Country music the worst thing ever... (calm down) ... Recently i have been really enjoying the Great Johnny Cash and the group he formed with Willie Nelson etc The highwaymen. - i cant stop listening to / Silver stallion - Solitary man - highwayman - America remains - i walk the line - ring of fire - whiskey river.

I KNOW some of you are nodding your head and have a slight smile on your faces reading though those songs with happy memories of the lyrics. Can you help me find more of these great country singers?

although I was familiar with much of Johnny Cash's songs of the 70s-80s era, I moved on to other stuff.  Gizmo re-introduced me to the later work of JC, a few years ago.  I found it to be profoundly moving, perhaps some of his best work.

some examples:

Gonna cut you down

Hurt

The banker man grows fat
Working man grows thin
It's all happened before
And it'll all happen again

Ahh loving these songs already - isnt Hurt a cover? but JC does really make it his own.

What are these "other stuff" you moved onto Lloydie

I can give you dozens of quality names, I had put in a reply with some names but there was one name that I had mentioned that I decided was too extreme and therefore I have removed it.

Yes Hurt was originally by 9 inch nails, "other stuff" is too much to cover, but Springsteen figures large  :D

here a JC cover of a Springsteen song highway patrolman

followed by one of my favourite Springsteen numbers "Brothers under the bridge"

and to finish off, here's Springsteen doing a tribute to JC Give my love to Rose

I think the big difference is that as syou get older you actually start to "listen" - both to the intricacies of music itself and perhaps most importantly - the lyrics and the storyies they tell - and how well the music helps tell that story......
