Here's the deal
« on: April 28, 2010, 05:02:33 PM »
So I changed ISP to B.T. basically because their helplines are free and I would much rather ring up to complain on a free line rather than pay for the privilege.

Now when it is activated they said this:

For the first ten days or so, your broadband might slow down or even stop now and again. That's normal. It takes that long for your broadband to reach its top speed. You can help it along by leaving your Home Hub on all the time, and using your broadband as much as you can for the first ten days. If you’ve got questions about the speed of your broadband after that, go to www.bt.com/help/broadbandspeed.

So. What's this all about then?
1. Does it mean that they won't give me all the bandwidth if they know I only use it now and again?
2. Is this what happened with my old ISP ?
3. How do I maximise usage when I'm not here apart from leaving it on all the time?

TIPS PLEASE ANORAKS

Thanks Moley

1. I've heard stories which suggest this is true. My own ISP suggested I regularly use the BT broadband speed checker as connections often seem to magically get better if you use it ...

2. Dunno

3. Leave Facebook on 24/7 ... Download lots of stuff :) Use BBC iPlayer every day ...

Moley - this is quite normal and it's simply that the newer broadband technology ADSL2/+ is an adaptive rate system and when initially connected the provider configures your connection wit a maximum settingof whatever you have asked for/bought.

However the actual maximum achieveable speed for everyone is different and the circuit you are on tries testing itself for a while at the higher speeds available and sees what the error rates are and then over a week or so it reduces the setting until it acheives a stable connection and then sets itself at that value permanently - it's nothing to do with how much you use it the circuit is constantly testing and monitoring itself during this period.

Obviously the more you actually use it over that period the more accurate it's ability to assess your traffic is and the more accurately it can profile the stability of your connection.

Moley - simplest thing to do is to setup your broadband router to automatically reconnect - it may already have been configured to do this.

Also worth a read of the topics here :-

Thanks Jimmy,
How do I set up the router to re-connect automatically.
At the moment I'm typing this whilst the phone is doing 1471.
It's the only way I can get a connection. It lasts 30 seconds then I have to phone 1471 again

That's not right Moley - phone doesn't need to be in use to have a broadband connection - what model router have BT Supplied ?

Pretty certain that's a fault Moley - report it to BT - did the negineer check this after the initial installation ?

Haven't gone to B.T. till next Thursday Jim. Still with old ISP. Found out long ago that the phone boosts the signal for a while. Back on line since after dinner. getting 0.1MB at the moment, Next door get 0.3MB with B.T.
Gonna get in contact with the papers next week and tell everyone in Llanrug what they pay for and what they get, that'll start a storm.

So, I'm set up with B.T.
Getting a speed of 0.23mb download and 0.36mb upload but at least it's a constant connection.
Will wait 10 days as they said before I start hassleing them.
