Canon 400D - these were taken with a 50mm fixed focal length lens at f/1.8. This is such a wide aperture that I usually get pin-sharp portraits even without flash indoors. Not quite sure why these weren't up to scratch. Never mind though, it's not as if I'm selling them!

For comparison, here's a shot I took of Gregor with that lens. It's MUCH sharper. On the other hand, I have just been looking at my old shots, and the ones taken with that lens vary considerably.

/Geek ON

I've just realised what it is - it's the depth of field. At f/1.8 it's very shallow, so the background gets blurred out with the subject in sharp focus. Obviously it's not the greatest for taking shots of several people, though - as some will be out of focus unless they are all exactly the same distance away. I got the focus point right on some of the shots, but there's a couple where I can now tell that part of the person's gi is in focus and their face isn't!

Small lesson for me there.

I try to keep further distance from the subjects ,then crop out the unwanted area, better chance of all subjects will be in focus. (my geek bit)

Whilst depth of field does vary with distance I don't think what you are saying is necessarily correct - decrease aperture to say F8 to increase DOF and get a broader "plane" in focus....

I had deliberately stopped the lens down as far as possible in order not to have to use flash. This did work, but I hadn't considered the effect it would have on multiple subjects.

Next time I will use a smaller aperture and the hotshoe flash unit!

Hotshoe flash isn't very powerful so if you are depending on it to shoot a large group with a 50mm (75 mm effective on a crop sensor dslr) you will most likely be quite far away and will need to bump the ISO up to 400/800 perhaps to increase effective pop up flash range.

I agree but there is a chance of blurring due to lower shutter speed. lets not go into grainy pics.

Not if you do it properly   - higher ISO allows faster shutter speed + use of flash helps reduce motion blur - although the higher the ISO the greater the possibility of induced nois but a modern DSLR will be fine at up to 800 ISO - even a Canon or NIkon :P

Cheers Jim - I have an external unit to attach to the hotshoe rather than the popup unit, so a little more effective
