when to cut back
« on: June 03, 2010, 10:52:00 PM »
after 1st hour training I hardly had anything left in me, this meant my 2nd hour training was well below what is needed to give a good performance, the second hour is more taylored to brown belts. do i stop the first hour in order to give a better performance in the second, I really do enjoy training but am I sacrificing my advancement for pleasure?

I'm crap in every session...My excuse is that I'm old and decrepit

You are young and fit....Nahhhh... It's just this weather..it was very hot last night.

You'll be O.K. when the rains come...

Also you try too hard all the time

I've never walked out of a training session not feeling totally knackered (after all why do you think I'm called "JimmyTheHoover" ? - it's the noise I make gasping for air and not just because I suck at Karate  )- even the ones I've been determined to "take it easy" in - and if I ever do then that's the time to quit.

If you actually "do" Karate then that's the way to "do" it - full commitment to every session and go for every session that your Family/Life will let you away with.

You won't get any less tired over time - but you will get better.

That's it then, i'm going to carry on with the two, but the big question : when does relax become lazy? if not 100% then your lazy?

The way you train Arwel, you could relax and slow down by about 90% and still be trying hard and NOT being lazy.

Don't worry about it - it's never gonna happen - I still get told "relax" - "breathe" - "less tension" - "too much power" etc. etc.

I know exactly what you mean Arwel. The way I'm thinking at the moment is, if I'm trying as hard as I possibly can and I make a mistake then it doesn't matter, I'm hoping that that's what the instructors are thinking as well :? but I don't want to relax so that it looks like I'm not trying at all and can't be bothered, then everyone will give up on me and I won't get any help etc. On the other hand, if you don't relax you just tense up and your performance suffers anyway so you can never win. It's a hard one Arwel.....
The more you sweat in training the less you bleed in battle,a fool says I can't, a wise man says I'll try.

Try working on relaxing sooner after each technique is executed, so that you re not constantly tensing your muscles, trying to generate power, and practice this especially in between techniques in kata or kihon when you ve got more time to be aware of it. You will find this helpful in learning to conserve energy and eventually to kime more effectively.

[/quote]this is where I'm losing it, all energy gone, I think that for the next few sessions I'm going to take a relax mode(not full blast) if you  see me going like the clappers please remind me to chill, and if you see me being a wet drip with no go you will know what part of my karate I'm working on.(got to remember CHILL)

I think you might be misunderstanding what is meant by relaxing. Don't go half pace,- go as quick as you can, but don't be tense/stiffening your muscles before and after you've completed the technique. Just focus/ contract your muscles/ grip the floor when completing the technique/ (when you stop). You move slower if you re tense anyway. Think of putting the brakes on (i.e tense) on the finish line rather than on the stretch home, and let go of the brake as soon as you ve crossed it again. I hope that makes some sense to you Arwel!!

"Relax"
What all instructors say all the time.
BUT
I think it's the wrong word  to use ! As everybody immidiately thinks of "Relax" as "Chilling out on the settee"
But
Also the right word to use.
Its just that it means different things.
Perhaps the right words are:
"Economy of motion whilst maintaining a Zen state of mind to achieve the purpose you set out to do whether it was to hit or to block and hit and to do the maximum amount of damaage to the attacker using the minimum amount of expenditutre on the part of the defender just in case there is another attacker to be dealt with"  - So to save words time and energy we'll call this phrase "RELAX"

I'm into maximum damage, with the feeling of adrenalin, sweating, contact, and if this makes sense - the feeling of having earned the ability to hit hard, and not just have it(as a talent). I'm a difficult person to understand. :(
