A request from Mrs Moley
« on: May 10, 2011, 07:40:17 PM »
Dear Huw,
Mrs Moley is very worried!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-13343600

If Mr Gate$ buy's Skype then he will bu$$er it up and it'll have to be re-licenced every year and will probably be full of bugs and crash all the time. Then there will have to be updates and patches and it'll mean that she won't be able to chat to her cousin in Australia and family in Japan. Certainly not for Free like she does now.
She is asking Please Huw can you have a word with your "Penguin" friends and ask them to come up with a Linux version?

Well first off Moley there is a version of Skype available for Linux - however it is a little buggy. I'm also a little worried about the future of Skype. If M$ have spent $8bn buying the company they're unlikely to keep things free!!

I used to use Google Talk ... I wonder what it's like now  :-k

The figures for the Skype sale are mind bending. A group of investors bought Skype from E-Bay around 18 months ago for $1.9bn. Since then Skype lost $418m in 2009 and $7m last year. This slowing down in the rate of loss meant that the investors thought Skype to now be worth $2.7bn!!! When Microsoft came-a-shopping the investors replied that they wouldn't accept less than $7bn - M$ replied with an offer of $8.5bn CASH (no shares etc.)!!! Needless to say the investors couldn't believe their luck. Keeeeeeeeeeeeerching  :D :D

Just to recap that's $8,500,000,000.00 for a company which despite having 175 million regular users - has never made a profit. Not one cent.
