Ubuntu updates
« on: November 05, 2011, 06:59:45 PM »
Well

I've discovered how to update Ubuntu.

Had to change the settings.

BUT.. You can only update one step at a time.. i.e if you had version 1.. you have to update to 2 before you can get 3 etc....

So far have reached 11.04

One more to go.. then it's on automatic updates..

Hopefully the next one ... 11. 10 has a cups for the Kodak printer.

What is your latest version?

Shi££... Solved my printer problems... But now Open office is ... GONE FOREVER

Instead it is Libre Office...
Works O.K.

But

Can't open any ODS file from Open office..

LOL. Why do you think I left some settings off!!! You seem to be doing fine though. Every problem you've described is fixable, give me a shout if you don't find the answer.

What version of Ubuntu do you use  Huw ?

Are you using Libre ??

What do you think of it all?

Things I Like...

It prints in true colour

Things I don't like

Sometimes there is no Little cross Top left hand corner to exit
so you have to go to
File...

Scroll down...

Currently running 11.10, 11.04 and 10.10 depending on which machine I'm using. Servers all on 10.04.

LibreOffice is a new version of OpenOffice. In a nutshell the developers of OO had a row with Oracle (the company which 'owned' OO) and left en-masse to start LO. LO is now developing much faster than OO used to, so generally 'a very good thing'. Libre should have just taken over all the OO stuff 'transparently'.

The new interface (called Unity) takes some getting used to. It's still very young so it will improve very quickly over the next year or two. It's taken me ages to get comfortable with it - but I'm OK with it now. In a year or so I think they'll have a world beater on their hands.

Libre loads all my Open Office files (And M$ as well) so it looks like it is here to stay.

So I was going to save my OO files as LO files...

BUT

Although thre's an option to save as everything under the sun... can't see which ones are the LO option.

i.e. My Spreadsheets in OO are called .ods  and my word documents are .odt

So what should it be in LO ?

Same. The .od part stands for open document - an open standard anyone can use.

Yes. We'll discuss over a pint. This is where you start backing up to a cloud service. :)
