AWWW....HE DIDN'T VIDEO IT seriously, a good reminder that we should not take our "toys" for granted. If it can happen to a guy of this experience, it can happen to anyone. Maybe we should re-emphasise the safety rules for the next cutting party? lloydie

Good idea Lloydie Here they are :
SWORD SAFETY THREE GOLDEN RULES.
1) never completely unsheath a sword unless you want to cut something with it.
This is the first and foremost rule. A sheathed sword can do little harm even if mishandled.
If you want to examine a blade, there's really no need to completely unsheath a sword to examine the blade. The tip of the sword it's its most dangerous part. Keep the tip in the scabbard, and the scabbard in your hand and you control the whole blade. If you want to examine the tip, take the same precautions you'd take for cutting (see rules 2 and 3)
2) Always maintain control of your surroundings
(10'-180 degrees rule) when handling a sword, keep an empty 10' circle around you, and an empty 180 degree area in front of you, up to a solid backstop. This means that anything you don't want to cut or impale shouldn't stay in this area. This way even if you goof, or loose grip of the sword during a swing, no harm will be done.
Maintaining control of your surroundings also means you should always know what's around you, and that you shouldn't handle a sword near blind corners or doorways from which an unaware person may come through within reach of your sword.
3) Always Maintain control of your sword, never direct a sword edge or point at something you don't want to cut.
Maintaining control means never handle your sword in such a way that you can't control it perfectly. Never throw a swing you can't pull back. It also means never leaving the sword unattended where unauthorised people may get it.
last, but not least, edge and point control are of utmost importance. If someone bumps into the blade, or bumps you, if you take this precaution you won't accidentally cut or pierce something (or, worst, somebody) you didn't mean to. "Sorry" doesn't help a lot when you got a foot of sharpened steel stuck into your body.
Having a sword is a honour and a responsibility. Not having eyes on the back of your head is no excuse if you injure somebody while handling a sword.
You have the sword, you have the responsibility.
It's that simple.
Be safe.

A few months back, "Wani" sent out an e-mail attachment with a clip of a little kid opening his Christmas presents and getting a lightsabre. I know that this was a spoof video and very very funny. BUT, IT DOES HIGHLIGHT THE DANGER and responsibilities when handling a sword. Especially what happens behind you ! Can someone please post a link ?
Thanks

Just saw something else that highlights just how dangerous swords can be. Lloydie lent me the "Cold Steel" DVD.
Swords are "tested" on all sorts of things with gruesome results.
Believe me, swords need safety rules. The DVD showed sides of beef being cut by a sword with minimal effort. deep gouges as deep as your hand were made into slabs of beef with the merest touch. Swords slice through 3ply wood with ease.
Read the Safety rules regularly. Don't get careless !

Now I suffer for about three weeks. Three weeks of thumb pain or of ear-ache Moley? I think I know the answer !! When I almost took a chunk off my thumb my missus gave me greif for ages and ages. You have my sympathy Mr Moley - unlike that horrible Azzy fellow who just phoned me laughing about your accident ...
