dealing with kicks
« on: July 24, 2005, 09:59:26 PM »
A perennial subject in the dojo is dealing with kicks.   We are told not to block them - advice that Big John (and others) would agree with.  So how do you deal with them?  Sabaki requires timing and good distancing.  I came across this clip from KU:

http://abum.com/?show_media=8898

Mas Oyama appears to be using his body to disperse the power of the kicks.

Great session(s)  tonight (x 2) where at various points Moley got us to MOVE so as not to take the Mae-Geri.  I think that Mae-Geri is a difficult kick to counter with one's body, whereas mawashi-geri for example, might lend itself more to the stepping-in technique.

what say you?

What a brilliant video. Amazing. I need to find a way to play this video half speed to see what on earth he's doing !!

BTW agreed, I can't think of a way to counter mae-geri (or yoko geri) with one's body. Mawash and ushiro both seem to lend themselves to a stepping in blocking technique.

Sorry Seki ! I got a bit carried away last night..
,,If it's any consolation I'm also walking "like John Wayne".
Mrs Moley asked:
"are you hurt"?

 I said..
"No, there were "Guests" in the dojo and I had to give them a SEKI WELCOME"

Strange, but I didn't feel that last nights sessions where physically hard - not panting, out-of-breath hard anyway. But today my joints have been hurting like hell !! What on earth did we do that casued that much grief ?!! Apart from the extra stretching (which got a little competitive) I can't think of anything really punishing that we did. :-k  :-k

Except Kanku Dai ...

Just had a look at the clip Lloydie (it was blocked in work "porn"!!! let's not go there with the IT chaps in work), any way, Oyama does not seem to be "blocking", more of taking the kicks, but we must remember that these guys are Kyokushinkai, they train for 'knock down', and so they condition their body's to take a pounding (like Azzy's in the process of doing).

Interesting footage though, Oyama resembling the late Kase Sensei in the way he moves, using circular punches; as Kase Sensei once said "1944-45", Oyama was once a student of O-Sensei Funakoshi, with no doubt a little influence from Yoshitaka......

Will have a word with Moley about conditioning excersises, seems that there's a lot of complaining that the sessions have been getting a little too easy.

Hmm. OK - fair enough. Didn't think of it quite that way.

First time I looked at the video I thought it was Kase. Incredibly similar in looks and movement.

When are you back Mole Bach ?

Is this a sempai/kohai thing you have with Azzy?......or can anyone join in

Agree with the "taking the kick" comment, but I thought he twisted a little "into" the kick, would be interesting to see it in slow-mo. Perhaps our nerdy friends could oblige?

The circular style is very appealing to me for various reasons, he also seems to have great maia and composure, but having read what he has done that hardly seems surprising.  Whatever the views of his "training" and "competition bouts"  (including against bulls) it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever emulate his training methods.

Kanku Dai was awesome wasent it? mental feat just to remember it... liked those stretching execrcises as well, the warmth of the other person's body kept your muscles relaxed. I've been walking like Jon Wayne for weeks now anyway.

Welcome to the club Jewels !!

Kanku Dai was indeed awesome - but I had great difficulty falling to the floor. I'm usually quite good at falling over so it was somewhat of a surprise to find that I had trouble doing that !! It's going to take ages to learn that kata though. SOOOOOOO long

I missed monday s training, so what were these stretching  excercises you did with the partner. Were they the ones where you sit on the floor with legs apart and you pull their arms and legs? I like those

One partner in  a low kibbadachi stance - the other assumes maegeri position and places heel on partners shoulder. The partner in kibbadachi stance then slowly stands up

It was OK to be honest. I was surprised how well I could stretch in mae-geri. Azzy was very impressive. I was standing almost bolt upright with his foot on my shoulder. Well done that man  8)  8)

We also did the same kind of thing with Yoko geri
