Core Strength
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:28:42 PM »
I had an interesting hours training last night. The bruising on my ribs meant that tensing my torso was pretty painful. Even after being in training for a few years now I was gobbsmacked just how dependent we are on our 'core muscles' to perform almost every technique. Blocking, kicking, kime, turning in the Heian katas - all require extensive use of our core muscles. I guess it follows that the better conditioned our core muscles are the better we will be able to deliver our techniques.

Taking a quick gander round the net I found this page which may be of use to people.

N.B. - Gizmo, please correct me if you feel these excercises are inappropriate.

CORE MUSCLES!

I've had a bad lower back pain since about 7 years now, ever since revising on a wooden chair for over 6 hours revising for uni exams.

I've considered seeing a chyropractor been to complain to the GP atleast 4 times the last of which I saw a diffrent Doc and he insisted I put my Gi aside and took up Pilates.

His reason being that my core muscles in the back would gain better excersise. Moley has commented since the begining that my stance looks off a little because my bum sticks out.

Anyone in the same boat? Any sugestions who I can see to sort this out?

Talk to Zac !! Join the growing list of WTKF karateka on his client list. He worked wonders on me on Friday last week - I walked out of the treatment room after an hour and a half feeling like a new man.

I tried one of these, "the superman", today. Hold this position for 30 seconds to a minute.

The website says "expect to have a reasonable degree of muscle soreness in the initial few weeks." Their right  :(

What's wrong Moley? I thought that was pretty nice of the brat!!

I had the red and white belts tonight and, fair play, they where all very well behaved. But when I caught some of the boys talking I decided to 'punish' them with "Superman"       Within 30 seconds the unpunished kids had also joined in!! They loved it.

Sorry, but he photo provided is not the best example. The body needs to be more straight, his lower back is curved in too much, this can lead to back problems in the future. He should have a more neutral spine. In the above pick, his bum is sticking out just a tab bit too much. With such an exercise, in regards of the back, correct form is crucial.

The exercise itself is good, but, if you are training regularly, then all the muscles you need from your core are being imployed. IMO.

I will check into this.
