How late is too late ?
« on: December 16, 2002, 08:16:55 PM »
Moley - I'm missing training tonight because of the kids Christamas show. Wednesday I have a similar problem - though it might be finished just in time.

Dilema - do I pack my Gi and try and get to training maybe a few minutes late ? I understand that being late is considered dissrespectful in Japanese culture. How late, in your view as Sensei, is too late ?

Here's a story Dave Hooper told me after training about Osaka Sensei.
As you know it is a serious breach of ettiquette to turn up late for training. One day at the JKA, Osaka Sensei was supposed to teach. He turned up for training 15 minutes late!  He walked in, everyone was waiting for him, looked at the clock and then called Sensei Kagawa (the senior student that night) over. He gave sensei Kagawa one hell of a
Bo##cking and pointed at the clock. Sensei Kagawa took the clock off the wall and turned it back 15 minutes. Then replaced the clock. The lesson went on as normal and Osaka Sensei left.
When he went through the door, Kagawa sensei took down the clock and put it back on the proper time. Shrugged his shoulders and then carried on.

So you see, it really doesn't matter if you turn up late !

Ah Helen, you are simply experiencing the "Seki Syndrome" phenomenom.  This occurs when you start to move faster as you do more and more karate.  Gwyn is at the stage now where he can turn the lightswitch off with a mawashigeri and be in bed before it gets dark!

Dave,

I know of one karate-ka who is so fast that he can have a shower without getting wet....

That is better than having the S A S syndrome, getting in and out without being noticed.

Sharon,

Since you mentioned it, did you know that most of the SAS were 'failed' librarians?  Just ask Azzy

Yes Mole Bach - that's true.  I recently read how "Lofty" Wiseman failed  Librarian Training and so had to settle for the less arduous role in the special forces.
