Fighting or Aesthetics ? ?

Getting back on to subject..
Fighting or Aesthetics.

Here's food for thought.
You cannot fight and defeat your opponent ithout first establishing communication with your opponent.

Hence you cannot perform Kata properly without doing the same !

Actually i think most of the Bullshi**t is coming from me Moley..i abhor the thought of physical violance, i don,t like Kumite very much because i can,t do it and i,m scared of hitting someone...and if i stare into anyones eyes long enough it just weirds me out...there is only a small handful of people that can or might be able to do Karate and i know without a shadow of a doubt that i,m not one of them nor will i ever be, but i suppose my love for it is in the trying and i get a lot from trying, so let me have my little bit of Bulls**t Moley if you would  :D

It doesn't have to be violent Jewels. As long as it's authentic and the movements are as they should be. You saw how the Sensei moved in Edinburgh..Poetry in motion. That's what we strive for. Not violence. Even during the Kumite, It was top class stuff, awesome in fact..but nobody got hurt did they. Anyway you move O.K. so it must be getting through to you.

I think the fact that everything we do except Kumite starts with a block is a significant statement about the attitude to physical violence, (but of course in Kumite someone has to set the ball rolling otherwise nothing would happen).

As a novice I am also concerned about misjudging things so either fall short in distance or veer away from the actual target (probably a much worse temporary solution than stopping short, something I have stopped doing with punches in the past month or two but still tend to do with kicks), and whilst pulling back with full power, I am not giving 100% to the punching hand so as to be confident in my ability to stop it with relative ease.

However when we were doing that drill with three people as stationary targets in a triangular arrangement I started to get more into it and felt the same thing on the back of my hand as I had felt on my chin when the Dan grades have punched Jodan to me on occassions. ie like a faint breath of wind just which I took as my cue to stop!  Apart from the confidence and skill that comes from practice How do the higher grades actually think they sense things to enable them to punch with full power and fine control for distance??

I also find looking into peoples eyes odd, proably as I don't tend to give people much eye contact at all, most of the time I just stare at their feet!!

hmm......  I like some of the up/down body movements, some of the moves are very different in terms of power (the shuto uke at the end is a bit camp  :D ).  Lots of chinese boxing influence I think, before the JKA got to stylise it all.  Overall I prefer the shotokan version, but this is still interesting to interpret.
