LEAST Favourite Kata - And WHY.....
« on: May 10, 2006, 08:10:58 PM »
I'll start..... I hate (with a Vengeance)  Heian Godan.

WHY :- Passed all aspects of my first attempt at my Shodan Grading and failed on the "selected heian Kata" - guess which one ?

Why I Failed is another story for another time

.....I STILL hate it 'cos I've still got a psychological block about the final few movements of this Kata - you know the bits - "turn gedan nukite (or shuto-uchi)/nagashi-uke - pull up - Manji Kamae - repeat other side..... and just cannot get the transition to the "other-side" smooth and effective.......

...Oh My Gosh - Nidan can't do a Heian Kata Properly - whatever next

does everyone in your association do a selected "basic" kata as well as the brown belt katas in their shodan grading, Jimmy? Although it was in the grading syllabus, I can't remember seeing anyone having to to do two katas in their shodan grading over here, or it hasn't happened for a very long time... is it usual practice, and does Kawasoe choose or do you choose or was that a long time ago as well  :-k

...Oops - just spotted your other question Siwan - sorry - in theory the Examiner picks at random any of the other Katas preceding the "Grading Kata" group- and you are quite correct - I can't recall a Dan (any grade) grading in recent years where the candidates a have been required to perform a secondary Kata - IMO they should reintroduce this requirement....

.....could be quite fun to watch Shodan Candidates try to remember a Random Heian kata

"LEAST Favourite Kata - And WHY....."

Anything with a jump in it ;-)

Hmmmm. Can't think of any kata I really dislike, although there are aspects of many kata I do dislike.

Heian Nidan: I can never finish on embusen! Mind you this is my fault not the katas

Heian Godan: Mid-way through, as soon as I do the empi I get confused and break into a chorus of Bassai Dai ...
The hunter that chases two rabbits catches neither one.

Jumps - I agree - should be reserved for the reaction after Ajime ! In a Grading

Aspects - of Kata -  don't really know what you mean - I just LOVE Kata - I know I said that I detest Godan but not really - just wish I could get past my BLOCK....

I'ts (IMO) o.k. to get confused between Kata - especially as you "learn" "Higher" grade Kata - quite normal to switch between Kata with similar/same combinations - after all Heian Kata are the building blocks for the Advanced Kata....

....only problem is It really should be a "Crescendo" of Bassai Dai......  :D

I have an absolute love/hate relationship with Tekki.  Beastly to learn, then you realise that in them is some wicked moves, so learn them all over again, then you do them one day and it all goes pear shaped  :?

not least fav by any means, but a b%gger of a series of kata to do well, and interpret well.

Yeah - know what you mean Lloydie - not even looking at Nidan or Sandan - 'cos my Tekki Shodan is so Cr@p

....strangely enough though Tekki Shodan is one of my Favourites- it's short and sweet and the Embusen is a piece of P!ss

...problem is that as it's all in Kibba-Dachi it's VERY difficult to convey any sense of real focus or effectiveness in a lot of the techniques......

.... but I do like a challenge  :D

I thought so too, until I studied some of the kata in depth.  Then I found that it is a horridly effective, gut wrenchingly brutal piece of work   That was  the point where I started to like it  :D

Hmmmm.... - no denying the effectiveness of all Karate "Done Right"  - just making the point that its VERY VERY hard to do the techniques in Tekki "Right"  - or at least convince an Examiner/Judge that you are doing the Kata "Right"    - I LOVE Tekkii Shodan BUT I'de never do it by choice in a Grrading or Competition....  :?

Ahhh,
I remember one person going for Ni-Dan who had to do Heian Ni-dan and one (who left the WTKF after) having to perform Heian Sho-dan.

Lloydie, I'm with you here as far as Tekki is concerned, a bugger of a Kata to learn, but full of 'interesting' Bunkai...........ohh we do'nt do Bunkai do we  Jimmy  #-o ](*,)

Personally, I have no particular one which I specifically dislike, apart from Kanku-Dai; it's just tooooo looonnnggg, and that nidan-geri at the end makes me look clumsy .
