MAKIWARA or PUNCHBAG ?
« on: January 10, 2003, 05:08:29 PM »
I'M UNSURE WHICH OF THE ABOVE TO MAKE AND USE IN ORDER TO IMPROVE MY PUNCHING PARTICULARLY TARGET PUNCHING. :?  :?

I HAVE READ MUCH ABOUT THE MAKIWARA MUCH OF WHICH BY TRADITIONALISTS OF SHOTOKAN KARATE WHO CLAIM ITS PROWESS AND IT BEING THE ONLY 'EQUIPMENT ' REQUIRED'.

I RECENTLY READ AN ARTICLE ON THE 'FIGHTING CHICKEN ' SITE WHEREBY THE AUTHOR PREFERRED NOW TO USE A FAIRLY SOLID/HEAVY PUNCHBAG AS IT WAS NOT SO IMPACTING ON THE JOINTS OF THE KNUCKLES.
HE QUITE RIGHTLY STATED THAT CONSTANT IMPACT ON THOSE JOINTS WILL IN LATER YEARS PROBABLY AFFECT YOU BY WAY OF HAVING ATHRITIC KNUCKLE JOINTS.

HE INSISTED ON THE PUNCHBAGS USE.

BUT GOING BACK TO THE TARGET ISSUE THE ARGUMENT FOR THE MAKIWARA (IF TRUE) IS THAT YOU ONLY GAIN FROM IT IF YOU HIT IT CORRECTLY IN THAT ONE PLACE .

AND AS SENSEI PAUL AND BRIAN POINTED OUT ON MONDAY THERE IS A NEED TO PRACTICE ON TARGET PUNCHING, i.e JODAN AND CHUDAN, TO THE PRECISE AREAS.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?????

MAKIWARA or PUNCHBAG ?

Dobgerry,  I think both have a use.  I find the makiwara is merciless in teaching proper "presentation" (for want of a better expression) of the punch.  Any deviation of wrist is fedback very clearly.  Also, I find it is good to hit a solid object, after all much of our training is throwing punches to thin air.

I have a punch bag in the garage (which has not seen as much use as i would have liked since I bought it)     Punching the bag is different, the bag absorbs the impact so i find myself trying to "punch through" with a bent arm (rather than the straighter arm finish on the makiwara).

in terms of target I would come down on the makiwara side.

I find the Rob Redmond view interesting, he admits that he has changed his view completely about makiwara (he used to be a big fan).  I wonder what the higher grades of the club think - is it a training aid that one loves, then discards, then loves again?

I think that you are just as likely to develop arthritic hands through using a heavy bag without gloves, as you are through using a makiwara.

Damn fine idea Moley - I would certainly like some feedback on my "beast in the garden".  Even better would be to arrange a B-B-Q makiwara party 8)

I personally make sure the wood is long enough and strong enough. Oak is good. Bury about 75 cm in the ground making sure you have a Breeze block buried in front and behind. Then pour in the concrete. Make sure it is long enough to come up to your upper chest level when you are in Zenkutsu dachi stance. Cover the striking part with a cut down Gardening Kneeling mat from B&Q and tape into position.
Position well away from the house or "Her indoors" will give you serious grief. In my old house I was banned to the bottom of the garden because she could feel the THUMPS ! when she was watching something called Coronation Street.

Before I start digging the garden up and burying breeze blocks I think I will invest in a punchbag I can put in the garage  :?

Just until I get the hang of it. I want to look good when I do it in the garden where people might be watching 8) (not vanity .. honest)

I have a punchbag in the garage. It's the only thing SWMBO would let me have. Mind you there are certain advantages to the garage given Welsh weather patterns  :D

Actually I prefer hitting Azzy - much more satisfactory        Seriously if you can find someone you trust hitting another person is an interesting lesson in how hard/weak your punches are. Aim low for the gut and start off slowly. I think both Azzy and myself were surprised at how close to full power we were getting before the 'target' cried a halt to the pounding. And yes Azzy's right - didn't hurt at the time, but the following afternoon it started to ache !!!

It goes without saying you should only do this with full consent from both sides and using considerable caution at all times.

You and Azzy can hit much harder than me so I'm not practicing with you

Any other 'trustworthy learner' interested in sharing some pain ?

I've just come indoors having had a session on my MAKIWARA. At the moment I'm just doing short reps of punches at about 3/4 strength to get used to the thing.

I've mounted mine on the back of an existing buried fence post and reinforced it with a length of wood at a 45 degree angle at the back.
I went to see a mate in jewsons in BANGOR and bought an 8' length of 4" x 4" fence post and got him to taper cut it as per instructions then when I got home I cut it to the correct length.
I have now got an extra pre-treated length of wood for another MAKIWARA 'cos i can forsee that I too will be banished to the bottom of the garden due to the HEAVY THUMP that comes from the pounding.

My knuckles are sore but.... NO PAIN NO GAIN...........

Iwent to see MIKE at MONA BOOKS on TUESDAY and bought a couple of books and was well impressed with his stock..... :D

If you want anything , like MOLEY and MOLEBACH have stated, check out his site and give him a ring..... 8)

I've just read C.W.NICOLs' MOVING ZEN ...fantastic..........all other sports are out of the window for me now.....its only SHOTOKAN  for me...................."A HUNTER WHO CHASES TWO RABBITS AT THE SAME TIME WILL CATCH NEITHER OF THEM"... TAKAGI SENSEI.

see you all tonight.. :x
