Which Kick is most easiest ?
« on: June 08, 2006, 09:50:57 PM »
Of the basic kicks in the UKTKF grading syllabus up to 1st Kyu wich do you find the easiest and why do you think this is so ?

.....you had to guess that tis topic was on it's way  :) so why not keep both active ?

I Vote for Mae-Geri as being the easiset kyu grading syllabus kick.

Why ? - NO rotation required - Kick delivered in same direction as when we normally move when walking forwards -  works well both as keage and kekomi to hides technical shortcomings to some extent - relatively easy to get body weight behind kick even when hips NOT used correctly....

So what do you lot think ?   :?

agreed Jimmy.  It is in a linear movement and is a familiar movement , eg similar (although different in delivery) to kicking a football - does that make sense?  :D

Mae geri gedan is easier still  8)

MUst be the translation from the Welsh that does it Lloydie - although it makes sense it's confusing - although I've neither seen how you perform Mae-Geri NOR kick a football so you COULD be telling the truth and just be "sh!te" at Football I suppose.................

.....all I'm prepared to say at this point though is Hike-Ashi  :o  :P

OK maybe I'm playing devil's advocate here ...

Mae geri is easy to do badly but much more difficult to do well! To get proper forward hip movement on mae geri ('penetration' I guess) is much more difficult and takes a fair time to learn. I see beginners gaining 'competence' faster in yoko geri (and mawashigeri in some cases) before they develop a dangerous mae geri.

Or maybe I'm wrong ...  :-k

Interesting Huw.......

.....do you "really" see beginners showing competence in yoko-geri (?keagi/kekomi?) and  Mawashi-geri ? ......not really doubting you just lookingt for info. on how you are assessing competence  :)

how you are assessing competence  :)

Effectiveness of technique. My mental measure is usually how much damage a student could do with a given technique.

We have a red belt with a pretty damn good mawashigeri - but a MUCH weaker mae geri. Similarly I can think of a green belt with a fine yokogeri but the mae geri 'flaps' a bit ...

I think one of the dangers with mae geri is that students try to go for too much height at the expense of 'penetration'. Pretty presentation before effectiveness? Maybe ...

Interestring Huw - definitely sounds a reasonable enough definition of "competence" but I'm still curious about  whether the yoko is keage or kekomi - if it's kekomi then it's of course possible to appear reasonably effective with a thrust kick - and to a certain extent a mawashi - without having a great deal of retraction on the kick......  :?

I also agree for the Mawashi-Geri ... it is much easier to learn that a proper Mae - Geri.
If you give the pupils an aim to kick on ... they will learn Mawashi much faster than a Mae-Geri (that is my experience).

BTW ... Jimmy ?
Is it really important for you to pull back fast ? Yes , ok ... it is ... but I can also kick and set down my leg in front of me in the beginning.
My aim is it to IPPON !!! Afterwards it is possible to jump away fast ...
Ok ... depends again what size you have ...
tricky ...

....depends on what version of the mae-geri you are doing ;) - kekomi or keagi..... - the snap back is there for a good reason and one of them is to enhance the effect of the kick NOT to allow you a better choice of foot position AFTER the kick (IMO)  :? (same applies to mawashi obviously)

....not being overly critical here folks -honest- just can't quite get my head around folk finding mawashi-(shudder)-geri easier than mae-geri-keage  :(
