oh by the way, i know this lad called jak something that can break 3 bricks, is breaking wood harder or bricks???? i've study a bit of physic and i know bricks are this speacial type of solid call amorphous, which means if you have a tiny crak n the bottom of it you can break the brick quite easy, you think he cheated??

Nope about 3" is my Maximum (stop sniggering!) and that was many moons ago but I've never seriously tried more - the 5" was just plucked out of the air anyway it might as well have been 10" - the idea was to provoke conversation.
You are correct about bricks and wood having different structural qualities - a pine board will bend before it breaks for example and just watch how a bricklayer trims/breaks bricks with his trowel - very little apparent effort involved.
Don't know if your friend was "cheating" - without examining the bricks it's hard to say and difficult even then - there's quite a few ways to cheat if it's simply important to you to be able to say/demonstrate that you've "done it - look at this !" but in the context of Karate I've always thought of Taeshiwara as being a "Personal Test" so what's the good of cheating ?
As far as I'm concerned there's no "real" difference in technique required for wood vs bricks/blocks - it's all about the transmission of "impact force" although psychologically I think there's a big difference and for breaking multiples (5x1" as opposed to 1x5") then I "think" that might be a whole different story......

....long time ago - but approx. 14" Long by 8" Wide by 1" thick x3 supported at each end across a couple of bricks (easier to break on a solid support as it's much more difficult if people are simply holding the boards as they can tend to move or flinch as you strike which can totally rob your technique of power - unless you're REALLY sharp and dynamic....
BTW - anyone ever seen an "air break" on a brick ? (not a roofing tile)

Don't bother conditioning you knuckles - not worth the trouble IMO - after all you've only got three left so don't waste them If you MUST keep breaking then put a folded towel over the point of impact and then do your best to ignore it - and forget the MDF

LOL - they definitely look cooler that a pair of "bag gloves" but I think that with those spikes the bag wouldn't last very long I'm actually adding them to my teenage Son's Xmas list as he's got the whole Naruto DVD collection The humana body is capable of remarkable feats of tissue repair - especially in the young so you've a pretty good chance that if you give the knuckle time and don't aggravate it no lasting damage will occur. Have a word with your club instructors about conditioning your hands if you do intend to keep on with the Tameshiwara - some of them have a lot of experience with this - ask Moley for a copy of the last Video Demo - COOL

Tsk Tsk Alex - what did you say about the "txt/slang" speak on the forum ? ...and I'm only an "adopted" Seki Alex - there was an event at the Old Peoples home where I live a few years ago and people had the opportunity to "sponsor a pensioner who used to do Karate and Seki found out about it and kindly adopted me and I've been hanging around these forums since then to keep in touch and pretend that I know something about Karate. But seriously Alex - I live near Glasgow in Scotland so it's a bit far to get to Seeki for training - but if you manage up to the Karatte Summer Camp one year in Scotland with the Seki Bunch then you'll meet me there.

Ahh young grasshopper, breaking the boards you wan. First "Caution" there is a technique..Oh and the wood must be DRY. I think the MOST IMPORTANT THING is that the people holding it for you must hold the wood properly and not "GIVE" at the moment of impact.
