120 hours ...
« on: August 08, 2006, 10:35:05 AM »
Just browsing the net (to avoid working) I came across this on the UK Tang Soo Do website ...

Quote
Grading 1st Gup to 1st Dan

Promotional Requirements for 1st to1st Dan (Midnight Blue Belt):
Candidates’ Basic Requirements.

To qualify for grading, candidates must have attended class at an officially recognised ITSDF club for a period of not less than one hundred and twenty one-hour sessions prior to the grading.

120 hours from scratch to 1st Dan ...   OK I know it's easy to be elitist about these things but that does seem to be an incredibly short minimum period. Even McDojos require more (and a large cheque of course ;-))!! Even just doing 2 hours a week you could theoretically pass Shodan in 15 months!!

Apart from buying one off EBay is anyone aware of a shorter way to a Dan grade?

From the syllabus listings it looks more like 10th Gup is a beginner  :P

No Probs. - so 120 hours from second brown to black isn't too shoddy then I guess - guess I'll stick with Shotokan when I get back to training on Saturday

I think not.

The 9th to 8th Gup grading requires training "for a period of not less than twenty one-hour sessions prior to the grading". The 6th to 5th Gup requires "must have attended class at an officially recognised ITSDF club for a period of not less than thirty one-hour sessions prior to the grading". A minimum accumulation of hours up to certain grades - not between grades. My reading is that it's 120 hours minimum accumulated hours from 10th Gup to 1st Dan.

Hi - the mystery is solved  :)

...I emailed the site contact and he has confirmed that the training times quoted are indeed the minimum training times BETWEEN each grade and this does increase as you move through the grades so the 120 hours is NOT the cumulative total training time from beginner to Black Belt - quite right too IMO  8)

Nice move JTH. It's a shame they didn't make that more clear on the website  :? Sounds a fair bit more reasonable now.
