Ripping DVDs
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:01:36 PM »
My turn to ask for help! I want to 'legally' rip two DVD's so I can turn the video into something I can put on YouTube. Can anyone recommend software to do this?

Ahhh,
I've been trying to do this for the past 3 months, the problem that I found was that the DVD file is in .VOB, and you need something to convert it to .AVI (or MPEG) to edit it :(.

I've downloaded loads of different programmes off the net, but have been unsuccessful, Azzy even gave me a disk with loads of codecs and some programmes, but it infested my PC with a virus :x.

Boots has promissed me something that "should" work, but I'm still holding my breath.

Hypothetically, if I wanted to burn an AVI file onto a DVD and play it on a normal DVD player would you expect the DVD making app to want to re-render the whole thing?

I downloaded Video DVD Maker and it's re-rendering the whole video. Even with my PC this will take hours  Is this normal?

WinAVI will typically take an hour to convert but I've had the same issues with .AVI files. Better to use .mpg if they are available.

DVD burning apps will take longer to convert the format.

would be interested if anyone has anything quicker than this as well .....  Jimmy ?

For DVD's to p,ay on "standard" home DVD set-top DVD players the discs must be formatted in a very specifig manner as described here :-

http://stream.uen.org/medsol/dvd/pages/dvd_format_filestructure.html

The basic video format used in DVD discs is normally Mpeg2 (although you can buy some home players that will play DivX now) and therefor any video format which is not Mpeg2, suc as AVI/DivX/XviD/WMF/Mpeg4 etc will need to be "transcoded/recoded.

As you know this can be a time consuming process - I don't think that any particular any particular application is faster than another for this process as it's primarily a CPU intensive task - obviously fast discs with large caches will minimise delays and the more memory the better - but the easiest way to speed up the process is using a fast CPU.

As well as the video stream recoding the DVD authoring software needs to produce the DVD file structure noted in the above link but the majority of the time taken is the recoding.

Some really good guides here :-

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/

And a pretty good (free) - at least good enough for me to have donated for it -  conversion program "The Film Machine" here :-

http://members.home.nl/thefilmmachine/

Hope this helps.....

EDIT: - TFM will even burn the DVD for you  :D

....I forgot to mention that an AVI format file is not actually a video format itself but only a "container" file format which provided video and audio streams synchronised in a single container.

Hence and AVI might actually"contain" mpeg2/mpeg4/divx/.... video format  and therefor some AVI's will need complete re-rendering and some will not if the source video stream is already Mpeg2 within the AVI container.....
