Kankusho

I am posting this, not for everyone to say how good or bad it is. I am posting it as I kind of introduction of my self, or to let people know what kind of karate I do. To help you get a better picture of me. That is all.

Hi Makoto,

Nice Kata, just one point I'd like to ask you though regarding the Uche-ude-uke's

After the tzuke's, you performed the Uke's slowly, is this what you've been taught in the ITKF???

The reason I'm asking is that we perform these uke's at speed, as taught by Kawasoe Sensei, which is also part of the ITKF  :? :?

So is there some sort of discrepancy in the actual teaching/performance of the Kata within the ITKF????

Just a thought.

Ahh thanks Jimmy... (Don't worry Makato, I always forget to hit "a" s on my keyboard.

Back to your rendition of Kankusho..
I notice that on move 4/5 , you perform the "uchiuke" type move slowly !

we do it fast, more of a punch/disengege immidiately type thing.

Otherwise the kata is pretty much the same as our rendition of it.

Siwan does a "Mean" version of it that could rival yours in competition performance, so does Mole bach.

The best "local boy" performance of it that I've ever seen was Kevin Banholzer in his younger days.

Now back On-Topic  :D

Nice Kata Performance Makoto  :) strong and sharp - good kicks  8)

Another difference I noted is the somewhat more "stylised" arm movement following the "gedan-barrai/uchi-uke" movements as you pull back with the gedan block with the left hand.... any info on where this variant comes from ?

No I did not learn that in ITKF. When I first came to Japan I saw a few guys in team kata do that move slow. I have thought about doing it slow before that as well. I think of Kankusho as a power kata, so I wanted to do those moves slow. Also, if you notice, I am not really pulling back, but pushing forward. My thinking there is that I am moving forward punching, so why do the opposite action and pull back. My energy is going forward on both the punch and the twist of the arm.

Nishiyama teaches alot about Kyo and Jitsu. My idea is that when you do the punch and quickly pull it back, the time in between that pull back and the start of the oizuki creates a big opening/kyo. So I thought it would be better to punch, then twist the arm into my opponent to limit the amount of time of kyo(the time in between techniques where you can get hit).

So it is my personal interpretation, but it is based in the ideas of kyo and jitsu.

Okay, this particular way of doing that move came from Kenosuke Seto. I was at a seminar last year where he taught this move to us. They, the JKA here in Japan is trying to teach a standarized version of kankusho because it is not a shite kata in JKF/WKF competitions.

However, I learned a similar move from Katsumata Sensei (Canada) when he was apart of ITKF. However, I think that this was his personal move as well. Both moves were very similar, so it makes me wonder if they did not come from the same source in the JKA.

The application of that move is some one has grabbed your gedan barai arm, you bring your arm back in that twisting motion(that should be enough to break to move) you do a middle finger ippon ken with the other hand to the guys wrist or hand to further help break the hold.
