Blind Panic
« on: February 10, 2003, 10:07:11 PM »
What a mess I made of Jiyu Ippon tonight, not only once but a few times.
I think blind panic has set in with the grading being so close. I feel  as if I am not progressing but going backwards. I have never felt so apprehensive of a grading as I am now.

Does everyone go through this panic?  How is best to deal with it?

I had a little practice with Lloydie after class tonight but didn't get the chance to talk about where I was going wrong.

If any of you have any hints to get me through this please come and tell me, I need all the help I can get..

Sharon

Shari - blind panic is just a mental block. It's like the time we start doing ten to kata (or what ever it's called) - I'm fine and I can do it - then I realise what it is (SHOOT IT'S THAT THING I CAN'T DO) and I'm frozen and pathetic and just getting my knickers in a twist . I know I'm only a baby red belt in karate  - but it's the same in every domain.  Those that worry that they cannot do it are those that care enough to get it right (they're not just bull - shooting). How many times have I been partnered up with you and learned absolutely loads? Often (and jewels has said the same).
Just do it babe!  Grade when you are ready.

Shari - this is something that Gwyn, Alun, Eryl and I have discussed at length. What you have to bear in mind is that you do not earn the respect of others in your dojo because of the colour of your belt. This is really earned through blood, sweat and tears. Keep training hard and focus on your karate not the next grading. I'm not saying that gradings aren't important, it's just that they are of secondary importance when compared to honest endeavour.

Couldn't agree more.

Shari - your 'karate history' is inspirational, the colour of your belt is imaterial. I always think of karate as a voyage of self-improvement, maybe belts are not so important. When I read your story I understood what you meant. Some of us aren't blessed with bodies which find karate easy - we have to fight before meeting the opponent !!

I dunno, something to think about maybe.

PS - Dark Lord - you had a childhood problem you mentioned in class today, care to expand ?

Shari - my thoughts turned to you in a supervision session today when we were talking about learning to be confident  of our own stupidity; which refers to being OK about asking for help, admitting you don't know the answers or cannot understand something. To my mind all the great thinkers and many of the greatest doers have learned that humility.

Aye, OK

When I was small (6 or 7), I contracted a rare blood disease (it's name consisted of all the letters of the alphabet!) which made my glands swell and did something to my legs.  I could not walk.  So I used to drag myself around the house with my arms and trip people up

I cannot recall a lot of the things, which is unusual for me, and I don't remember when I got the feelings back in my legs, all I do remember is having a lot of bloods taken and visiting the hospital a lot (the C&A then), which left a deep psychological scar which means that I am still scared of hospitals today.

I know that after this episode, that I was very clumsy for years, and used to trip over my own feet, but, thankfully after a few years training, I got my balance and coordination back.

So there we have it.

Sharon, please do not be dishartened, even now after twenty five odd years training, I still go home some nights and think exactly like you do, it's only natural, and lets be honest, those who do not self critisice are the ones that do not progress, and usually give up.

You were my partner for Kumite on Monday - and I thought you were fine. Don't worry!. The fact that you are analysing what you are doing, and that you are recognising areas for improvement, is only proof and reinforcing the point that you are growing and developing. Self criticism is fine, but dont let it get to the point where you are putting yourself down.

You are definitely doing ok, be proud of what you are doing and of what you are achieving.

Panic, fear, nervousness etc is an integral part of learning karate.
If you didn't experience these emotions in the relatively safe environment of the Dojo; how would you cope in a real fight?
By gradual introduction and continious exposure to these emotions, although I wouldn't say it eliminates them, it certainly lets you recognise them. Then perhaps they won't come as much of a shock.
