I was lucky enought to be given a few examples of Bunkai for Heian Nidan last night from Huw, and what he showed me makes alot of sense I feel. So with my pallette wet I went forth and did some digging on the t'internet.

I came across this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZmmhtwYbQU&feature=related showing different Bunkai for the same parts of the Heian Nidan kata. Some looks like moves you could use in a real life situation yet other looks alittle to complex to apply in an everyday fight. Am I right in saying bunkai can differ depending and what you want from it, as in are you looking to take contol of your attack or are you looking at removing his ability to continue the fight?

What do you think?

I actually quite enjoyed most of it - I suspect that you're correct about some of the options being a bit difficult to uae in real life (modern) fight situations - but the video showed a fair bit of creativity along with a mix of the more "traditional" bunkai apps.....

....one thing I look for with bunkai is whether there's any attempts to use what looks like strikes in the kata as blocks/throws/locks  etc. and vice versa since it's too "easy" to just look to substitute alternative strikes......

Practising my next kata again this weekend, Heian Nidan.

Thanks for the websites Liam, the first two were very useful, will watch again next week, and practice again whilst watching.

What I found today, was that Hikite is very important for this Kata, although I will no doudt find that good hikite is important in every hand technique, as I concentrated more on Hikite, I found my techniques were a little sharper, again, something to keep practising.

I would really appreciate any other advice on Nidan, areas to focus, or techniques etc.

Thanks
