I propose that in Jiyu-Kumite a karateka needs to be of Yondan or higher grade to effectively use combinations consisting of three or more techniques.......

OK, I like this one, but first define "effectively use"

Shodan examination combination:

Mae Geri - Juun Tsuki - Guaku Tsuki

I think that this is an ideal opener for Shodan Juy Kumite as well. They don't look like they are playing "tag".

Grading time is "Dojo Kumite" not Comp Kumite.

"effectively use" - how about "able to deliver all three techniques without leaving an opportunity for an opponent to counter between the techniques whilst still delivering each individual technique with proper focus/timing/distance (allowing for the opponent's movement/reaction) that it would score" ?

EDIT: - BTW I don't mean that you need to "score" with each technique - just that if the opponent doesn't move/react properly to the delivery it would score effectively - hope that makes sense.... :)

RE: Moley's feedback - Well whilst I don't disagree about the suggested combo being potentially effective in a Jiyu Kumite situation - I would certainly suggest that most Dan Grades wouldn't have much of a problem if attacked with this combo as performed during most shodan gradings....

Mmmmmmmm... Seems to work O.K. for some 1st Kyu's we have !

Don't you mean Dojo vs Competition kumite here / Usually in our Gradings we do Dojo Kumite...i.e. not stop after a point is scored but stop after Sensei Nods his head.

Mmmmmmm........... even within the context of the earlier definition ?  :?

Yes indeed  - Dojo vs Comp - no comparison except when you don't mind getting disqualified all the time - my mistake  - but I was agreeing  :D

After an onslaught/driveback with the Maegeri/juunTsuki..adding a Tsugiage before the HuakuTsuki...The GuakuTsuki can be firmly "Planted in"

I've seen Shane do it.

O.K. Seriously Jimmy...Shane is exceptional

But still I keep drilling it into shodan candidates to use combination attacks rather than the ocassional jab or halfhearted kick.

I know what you mean - Colin and Alan are always pushing the "Always Have One More Ready" when doing Kumite Drills and I agree - it's just that I personally think that (from observation and personal experience ) that it's pretty difficult to retain the necessary focus and concentration to deliver two "proper" techniques in a combo without simply using one as a feint - and that's a pretty dangerous habit to get into - although it does tend to be "self rectifying"

It might be my idea of a Holiday Shari but I'm not so sure that Mrs. JTH would agree

I keep hoping that I'll get a "works outing" for a couple of days somewhere driveable but no luck so far  :?

But I've so far managed to pair up with Gungnir and Huw and not been disappointed  :D - after all I'm an Honorary Seki now  8)
