....O.K. - For discussion purposes I suggest that the Yoko-Keage kicks in Heian Yondan serve no useful purpose and could equally well be replaced by the "much easier" Mae Geri Keage....  :?

I suggest that the keage kicks in Heian Yondan make sense only if they are gedan, and that the jodan "target" is more for aesthetic purposes.

I never thought (or was taught) them as anything higher than Chudan ("traditional" inside uraken strike/block with floating rib (or groin) strike Keage.

Sensei Naito performed Heian Nidan in front of the class a few years ago in Edinburgh and his kick looked very much like Kegomi. A kegomi attack to the opponents knees would probably be quite effective. This also ties in with your earlier remark - look for the simple applications in kata.

Absolutely HUW  :D

Don't really know (yet?) where I'm trying to get to with this discussion but I'm thinking about the possible "purpose(s)" of Kata such as :-

1) "Simple" Training Aid devised to incorporate a "reference set" of basic Shotokan Techniques put together with various directional movements and turns and stance changes with the intention of providing Kihon Practice Sequences.

2) "Not So Simple" Library of effective Self Defence techniques/Combos.  presented as 1) above but with interpretation/application of techniques allowed.

3) Both of the above......

....so obviously the ability to "vary" the kicking techniques to suit a particular Bunkai/Oyo/Application fits in quite well with 2) .......   :?

My bad!  Should have read "chudan"
