Kata Performance - Competition
« on: September 26, 2007, 03:13:37 PM »
Hi Folks,

Topical post with the UKTKF Cadet/Senior Championships on this Saturday  8)

What speed do you reckon that Kata should be performed in order to score well in competition ?

Also (for bonus points ) would this differ (for you) when performing the Kata for Grading purposes ?

Jim

BTW - I won't see you all at the Champs. as I'm not participating and will be teaching at the Club instead.

Hi Jimmy,
Kinda like asking at what speed a song should be sung at...
Answer:

Well have you heard Layla (original version) ?   7.8
Accoustic version            6.5

Cryf oedd calon hen y glas glogwyni,
Cryfach oedd ei ebill ef a'i ddur,
Chwyddodd gyfoeth gwr yr aur a'r faenol,
O'i enillion prin a'i amal gur.

I get the Analogy Moley - just not sure which one you consider to be an "Acoustic" Version of a Kata

Not many Seki this year :( Susan, Rhys, Tim and me - if I'm feeling better. If I retire due to ill health I will send a replacement. I can hear the Panzers warming up as I type ;-)

Grading and competition kata seem to be quite different in performance now. Shane got spanked by the judges last year for doing a 'fighting' kata. Maybe, in slight defence of the judges, Shane over did it - there was no sign of 'Japanese face' etc. - but the marks he was given were awful.

Rhys might be able to crack it though. His natural style is much closer to what the judges seem to look for. Go Rhys!!

While we're using the music analogies at which point does The Who stop (think wind milling power chords) and Spinal Tap being?

That's easy Huw - when the performance changes from enthusiastic to a parody of the real thing

.....so given that one translation/meaning of Kata is "Stencil".......

Could this perhaps indicate that Kata performance should not sacrifice the "Form" for the sake of the application/effectiveness ?  O:)
