What's The Least Shotokan Kata ?
« on: November 12, 2007, 11:37:36 PM »
Well - been thinking again (bad news - usually after LOTS  of White German Wine)

...so his time it's taken my alcohol fogged mind along the path of "why don't we do ALL the Shotokan Kata" ?

....come on you must have noticed that we seem to "trot out" the same half dozen "Advanced Kata" - whether it's in the Club or on courses.......

....you know the ones I mean.....

.....so I've been wondering if it's simply that the majority of "Advanced" Kata are just too difficult for most Karateka - including Dan grades to appreciate/learn.....  :?

....so this also got me thinking along the lines of whether some Kata are not "really"  "seen" as being Shotokan kata.......

...so - IF this was a reason then which Kata do you think might fall into this (admittedly rather dubious) category ?

So which Kata do YOU think is the "Least Shotokan" that you have come across ? (and if you have an opinion - why does it fit this description?)

Ta  :D

We have recently "Resurrected" kanku Dai after a long absence. It sorta comes around in cycles at Seki. When we find we've neglected something, we tend to do it every session for weeks after.
As for the most neglected... Mmmm at the moment for us I think it's the advanced Tekki's and Ji-in

Outch. Evil stuff.

It always strikes me that Unsu looks the least shotokan of all the katas. Having said that I haven't even seen them all!

Interesting Coincidence Moley - KT has been teaching Kanku-Dai over the past couple of weeks as well

I've got to give "my vote" to Hangetsu - hopefully for pretty obvious reasons - it really just does not feel like Shotokan at all to me - having said that I really quite like it and wish that we would do it more often  :)

At least you've seen Usu in the club..

Ji-in has been really really neglected.

When I first saw Hengetsu being practiced I thought, wow! that is a real goju ryu kata made better by the sudden speed after the turn. What's also good about it is that there is no jumping in the air or falling down, which is great!  A good honest kata!

I think Hangetsu - as Keith & Jim have said, it is soooo Goju Ryu, maybe also Sochin.

Love Sochin (although my knees and ankles hate it) great fast-slooooow combos and opportunities for explosive direction changes and body projection - although I still get that "Shotokan Feel" from it......
