Tanaka
« on: December 08, 2007, 08:54:58 PM »
Siw's quote on the Kata thread :
I dont want Mole bach to get a big head about this, but I ve just been watching osaka Sensei doing enpi kata and my god, I see his style so much in Mole Bach. There are so many similarities in how their bodies move - transition and technique, its uncanny! :D

Got me thinking about this man:

There's no doubt about it, Tanaka is a great fighter, however.....

Is it the dog in the fight or the fight in the dog???

I tend to think that it's the latter in this case, BUT, he has also got the skill behind it (and the speed).

For those who watched Khan's fight last night (all 72sec. of it), again we saw that it was actually skill that put Earl on his backside and not the 'killer instinct' that certainly I believed would determine the outcome.

Compare these  then, I mean have a look at Azzy and Huw breaking these boards; Azzy uses hip rotation for the mawashigeri, whilst Huw uses body weight in his gyakuzuki, both effective, but technically Azzy's is superior because he uses body dynamics.

Now take another look at this one,

Tanaka uses 'unorthodox' techniques to even the fight, technically, Oishi is the superior fighter, but for aggression and the ability to switch to grappling  and throws, makes Tanaka an unpredictable opponent, which has an adverse effect on the mental attitude of his adversary.  We all know that we'd rather fight a 4th or 5th Dan than a yellow belt because although the Dan grades are superior in skill, the yellow belts are unpredictable, and more often that not, we're the ones that get hurt (blocks on elbows etc).

:D You are right about the lower belts being unpredictable, i remember one time facing Gimzo during a training session,  i told him i was scared of him, he smiled and said
"its not me you need to be scared of,  it the lower coloured belts" i asked why, "i have the skill to stop or pull a punch they haven.t,"  "always be aware of their limitations". he was right.
Keep Smiling....

Nothing to do with Tanaka, but worth a look.

Did you see the blood, I nominate Azzy to try this new regime out on.

I thought the very last technique was a bit dodgy

Interesting though, I always found it a paradox that Japan's riot police (in a country where EVERYBODY conforms), such courses as featured in Angry White Pyjamas, and the action in this video, is so important  :?  Why? When do they use these skills?  The Japanese police are really not noted for their technical excellence in police work - probably because they have so few crimes to keep them busy.  So, are they doing this for utility -- can't see it myself, or for some other reason.  e.g. for spirit training? to keep alive some connection to the Samurai heritage? what?
